Googling a personal tax situation led me to the HMRC Community Forum (and a very useful thread). It's a beta version and a bit clunky, especially when it came to registration. My first attempt at a password prompted a helpful pop-up warning that I already had one like it for another forum. But I made FOUR attempts at interpreting the captcha and every time was told I'd got it wrong, and this was after taking very special care with the last three. And it's a bit tricky to bring up a fresh one.
Then I noticed I had a new email, which turned out to be confirmation that my registration was complete! I was immediately able to post on the thread that'd interested me, though when I tried to post a second one there was an alert that "this is awaiting moderation" - fair enough, as many forums have trouble with newbies who post spam.
EDIT: Oops! The registration process does take one to a variety of pages, and towards the end one asked (again) for my first name in one box and my second name in another one. Foolishly I entered my real names (the combination of which is unique), which appeared on my first post. Happily I was able to go to my profile and change to my one-word user name - which was immediately substituted in my post.
And I couldn't find an "edit" or "delete" function, which in many other forums enables one to cover up one's folly.

Recieved a tax rebate thus morning, 2 weeks quicker than they said it would arrive. Quite unlike the government to do anything quick.
