heard an advert on the radio for a Dyson hair dryer at £429, being pushed as an ideal present.
someone I know has a £5,000 gaming laptop on present list.
I know of people on benefits budgeting £500 plus per child
I work to a budget of £100-£150 per person, the total with food etc being about 1 months income, it seems that many people look at 2 month or more of their income, then they seem to do similar with summer holidays. I don't see how they can live and pay the mortgage, and bills etc on 2/3 of their income

I work to a budget of £0 and a good meal. We all gave up on trying to think of some tat to buy each other years ago. one of my colleagues used to give his partner envelopes with promises in as he always felt that they would be able to get the same things cheaper in the sales

Wife and I agreed on £30 max as a token gift as we would rather spend the cash on a holiday instead of rubbish we dont need. A gift for £30 is really hard work! Xmas madness gets worse each year. Bit bah humbug but I cant really be arsed with it anymore.

Presents are for birthdays.

its a mix , but saw one I know on means tested benefits handing over loads of kids toys in the local pawn shop ( I was there to collect an amazon parcel )

Bit bah humbug but I cant really be arsed with it anymore. Agreed, the whole thing is! A couple of years ago, my wife and I agreed no more 'enforced' present exchange at Christmas. We buy all we need for ourselves, and each other, all year long, so why give ourselves an extra burden at Christmas, especially as it often ends up unwanted and wasted. So we agreed, no presents for each other this year, just for kids, grandkids and family. Except I knew she would still get me "just a little something", so obviously I pre-emptively had to do the same, for the sake of continued marital harmony. Then it was: "I've bought myself this lovely jumper, you can give it me for Christmas if you like"... and so it goes on. Wind forward a couple of years and we're back to square one.  Best resign yourself, mogish, there are no easy answers. You know they love it and we just have to play along.

The entire concept of budgeting seems alien to so many now. As an 11yr old, I remember my mum buying me a bike to ride the two miles to my new grammar school... and taking an evening cleaning job to pay for it on the never-never for the next 52 weeks. I never had a holiday until I was 12. Other kids talked about theirs, but I never knew what a holiday was, until dad bought a family sized frame tent when I was that age. Tough times, but we were loved without being lavished upon. First and foremost they always ensured they could meet their bills.

I do think that budgeting is a concept far removed from many younger people these days. I remember an episode of the bailiff series 'can't pay we'll take it away'. A girl in her mid 20's , living with her parents failed to keep up the HP payments on her car. After a visit from the bailiff she was persuaded to cough up all her spare cash, with her parents making up the short fall. Her parting comment was 'bloody marvelous. I'm off to Spain on holiday in 4 weeks time and now I don't have any spending money'

Some people save money all year so their children get presents for Christmas. Many young people with children and a mortgage (or with high rent) are in a tough spot at the minute, but don't want their children to not have a good Christmas.

Absolutely berny! Nothing worse than that guilt feeling on xmas morning lol.
Always best to have another wee something hidden for emergencies. Even if it's only a box of after eights or something.
