SS page always pops up the 'online help' icon with the phrase 'Our staff is always ready to help'. Is that:
a) A perferctly reasonable and strictly grammitically correct statement recognising the singular collective noun b) A strictly grammitically correct statement recognising the singular collective noun but nonetheless rather grating as it does not reflect common usage c) A horrible Americanism reflecting that country's more common use of the singular rather than plural for the collective rather than our more common use of the plural. d) Correct on all potential grounds being reflective of the size of the SS back office team, but subject to a potentially overlooked change in the event of expansion.
No doubt the forum membership is keen to discuss.

When I'm on FS this icon pops up, but when I'm on SS, no such icon appears........................ Edit: perhaps as a moderator, bb, you could move your own thread to where it ought to be?

Clearly it means there is only one member of staff allocated to the on-line help desk.

"common usage" "language is a developing thing" These are among the plaintive excuses given by linguistic morons who don't like being criticized for grammatical mistakes. If enough people are getting the grammar wrong then it, by common usage, it becomes "right". The BBC etc are among the worst offenders. "The team are playing well." B*llo**s!! The team is playing well. In a good match both TEAM S ARE playing well. You can't tell these people!! (Well, you can, but they ignore it). PS I've just found out how to spell balloons. ..... edit: but not one tenth as annoying as those place's which display notice's showing where I can buy my banana's. They really pi's's me off.

I don't know why you say ' horrible Americanism ' when you are clearly wearing a baseball cap.
