around 10 years ago management decided that all remote engineers like myself would work from home, only coming into the office to collect equipment to drop off etc, but usually this meant people called in once a week or so. we had our homes designated as base so all mileage is from home, this worked well as we were geographically spread so travel expenses were minimised.
just been talking to an ex colleague.
After Christmas management decided that because one person in particular was grabbing all the long distance ie out of area jobs that the team needed an admin person to allocate jobs rather than the team doing it.
at the start of this month the whole team told to come into the office every morning so jobs for the day can be allocated by admin, no more find the nearest job at the top of the queue and getting it done straight from home, or indeed arrange jobs the evening before.
this admin person is allocating jobs strictly based on when they arrived in the queue so lets say there are 3 jobs in a town, instead of giving them all to engineer A she gives the first one to A, then when he finishes she find the next job on the list and allocates it to them, no consideration that engineer B is already in that building, or that there is a job slightly further down the list in the office they are just in.
the engineers are spending hours every day driving between sites when there is a days work on the site they started at. Customers are getting frustrated as they are getting 2 or 3 different engineers visit when they have 3 people with issues.
the latest trick is admin now uses google maps to check the distance between sites and is giving the team as many minutes as miles to travel.
I understand at least 1/3 of the team are already looking to change jobs, I think management will hit the roof shortly as the ex colleague I was speaking to says since this new improved system came in he's doing 1/2 as many jobs and travelling 3 times as far
