I've bodged it up in the past using the "break a matchstick off in the screw hole" approach, but this time that didn't work. So I took it apart and discovered that whoever installed it used only three screws. Two on one side, one on the other. Guess which one kept giving out? So I went to the local hardware store this morning to buy another screw. I like supporting little independent businesses where possible, even though there's a Scewfix just up the road. Guess how much one one inch screw cost? £1. inb4 all the "they saw you coming" joshing  . |

I found "1 inch wood screws" on the bay. No idea if the sellers couldn't post the right pics for the 1 inch wood screws or doesn't know what 1 inch is. They look more like 20 of 1cm screws.

I've got epic amounts of nuts, bolts, screws due to picking up my dad's habit if pocketing any old nut, screw or washer he spotted on the ground. The accumulation rate slowed markedly after British Leyland stopped making cars though.

The accumulation rate slowed markedly after British Leyland stopped making cars though. I properly hate and fear the old coffee jar full of miscellaneous fasteners... You can waste HOURS rummaging through, and never find a matching set of what you actually NEED. Buying my first boxes of shiny new screws was a liberating moment.

I hope you're sitting comfortably, but I have actually finished entire boxes of 200+...

Buying new screws, I can remember my dad straightening nails out to reuse, he had a dried milk tin full of nuts, bolts, screws, washers etc.
I reckon the time I spent searching through that time would buy boxes and boxes of screws etc.

But if you buy new screws, you miss the triumphant feeling of looking at the item you repaired and remembering, yes ! You went through Dads screw box and you found just the right thing for the job, possibly from the rear suspension unit of a Triumph Toledo. It’s a joy that lasts, I can tell you and yes I do straighten old nails.

But if you buy new screws, you miss the triumphant feeling of looking at the item you repaired and remembering, yes ! You went through Dads screw box and you found just the right thing for the job, possibly from the rear suspension unit of a Triumph Toledo. You only wasted four hours and had to compromise with two flat-head, and two pozidrive (one of which is twice the length of the other).
