I needed to refix a handle to a drawer recently, and ended up finding exactly the hardware I needed in my old Meccano set. Knew it'd come in.

But if you buy new screws, you miss the triumphant feeling of looking at the item you repaired and remembering, yes ! You went through Dads screw box and you found just the right thing for the job, possibly from the rear suspension unit of a Triumph Toledo. You only wasted four hours and had to compromise with two flat-head, and two pozidrive (one of which is twice the length of the other). but there is a joy to it.

Well, there are not many things in life which can be fixed with just one single screw. Otherwise, our NHS would’ve been fixed by now.

Matt Hancock was apparently useless at DIY.
One loose screw and his whole cabinet fell apart.

It must be a very bad cabinet if the structure cannot tolerate one loose screw.
I don’t think scandinavian design would have such a problem.

I suspect if you expanded 'the fix' it would illustrate how many moving parts are involved in the process. Starting with the need for a screwdriver and ending with the mining of the raw materials for the screw i suspect we could fill several pages.

Remember this "you need the right tool for the job"
and I've hear people refer to Hancock as a right tool
And don't forget Starmer's father was a tool maker

Nah 2 flathead, 1 posidrive and 1 Phillips I am relieved that I no longer have to work on equipment that uses a wide and varied selection of such fasteners in both metric and Imperial sizes.
I spoke to an engineering draughtsman once and asked why I needed 5 spanners and 3 screwdrivers to dismantle something.
There came forth a litany of buzz-words which, in the end, boiled down to cost and what was on the factory shelf at the time of manufacture.
Reader, I might have despaired.
Years later, I became heavily involved in the design of various equipments and became the bane of various design offices.
And I used to lug a technician's toolbox into design meetings in order to show them what the technician had to carry around. They got the message.
