Whilst trying to rationalise ancient paperwork recently, I came across a Certificate of Assurance of Equivalent Pension Benefits from donkey's years ago which tells me I am "absolutely and indefeasibly" entitled to the glorious sum of £2.18 per annum when I reach the tender age of 60. I am assured that when the time comes a lump sum will be offered in place of this tiny annual sum so, rather than treat myself to a smaller and smaller ice cream once a year for life, I may just splash out on ice creams for everybody here instead. Needless to say, I got lost in old letters and didn't succeed in rationalising anything!

I have a pension of £8.34 a year, not as low as yours. 18years ago, when it became payable, I was given the choice of receiving this annually on my birthday or to have a lump sum of £100 there and then. I decided that I would probably live more than 8 years and the way the offer was worded, they did not want to mess about with such a small amount. So, mainly to be difficult, I opted for the annual payment. In those days it would have nearly been enough for a bottle of whisky. However, I forgot that it would be taxed at my marginal rate, so my pension dropped to £6 something. The £100 would also have been taxed, so after 18 years I am still in profit although it now only buys a couple of minitures!
Moral:- Dont forget the Tax Man.

Annuity rates back then were over 10% so the £100 offer was quite generous. £8.74/10% = £87.40. (This assumes age 65. If you were drawing younger the offer will have been less generous.) A big difference from the 5% or so available today.

Hmmm, doesn't sound too promising. Will have to be home-made ice cream to feed that many mouths for less than £100! I'll have to sweet talk the chooks for eggs and do some early morning milking...

Close my eyes and I can almost taste that one! I must admit that Equitable Life would never have made me drool like even an imaginary ice cream can.
A boy close to my heart used to walk very slowly, eyes shut in total ecstasy, as he ate his ice cream as if it was the last one on the planet. He taught me a lot about what's really important in life!
Anyone else got any favourite combinations? (I'm finding this to be excellent bridge therapy)
