Whilst I object to financially supporting an audio visual version of the Graudian, I have to say that the BBC does produce some top notch programmes especially on BBC4. GRAUDIAN: an ancient noun, said to emanate from the Pontefract region of "God's Own", roughly translated to mean "Left wing rag, read by social workers and university lecturers". Definitely not suitable for real men from up north.

It’s more likely to be Hebden Bridge which is full of middle class, well heeled socialists, the Graudian is too upmarket for Ponty and the old mining areas where the Morning Star and Mao's Little Red Book are still mandatory reading.

And I wasn’t joking in the last part of that statement, I speak from experience as my brother in law has relatives by marriage in Featherstone and similar areas that hold views somewhere to the left of Trotsky.

BBC is the only TV broadcaster (apart from paid for film channels) which can provide any form of drama properly, totally free of having to interrupt the film/drama makers skilful work in gradually developing sustained atmosphere and tension without having to stop four times an hour for five minutes of advertising dross, thus ruining what the actors and directors and film crews have achieved. BUT ..... the BBC still slavishly adds unnecessary and intrusive "music" backgound to documentary programmes at every bloody opportunity. They cannot be told how this detracts from the superb craft of the film makers and some of the voice-overs. As for BBC news .... dreadful .... every opportunity dum-de-dum-dum-dum-de-dum-dum dum-de-dum-dum-dum-de-dum-dum- CRUNCH-de-dum-dum-dum-de-dum-dum-dum etc WHY MUST the news have this thumping drums and mindless thrumming ... to make the news exciting??? IDIOTS. Huh! I started off in support of 'im up north, (i.e BBC4 is very good, and R4 and R3 and R4+) but now I'm grumpy. edit... I've just realised I already had half that rant earlier in the thread - sorry!!

Typical - you harrow the north once (or was it twice?) And they never let you forget it. Anyway, I thought the only thing right-thinking Yorkshiremen read was Wisden?

As a cricket enthusiast I recognise Wisden as the third most authoritative source of knowledge on the game after Sir Geoffrey and the Yorkshire Post.

Agreed on the documentaries. Iplayer is great for downloading a random documentary to watch on the tube to AblTowers. The only drawback is that they have a couple of presenters that I don't like who seem to be regulars. They should diversify that a little bit.
And did the music and DJ line-up on Radio 2 get more contemporary or am I aging rapidly?!

(It was always The Grauniad in my day ...)
Just IMAGINE adverts on all radio stations! Radio 5's inane stream of promotion drives me mad as it is, but the thought of 'Accident Helpline' and 'Compare the Meerkat' in the middle of Peter Allen is too awful to contemplate. Hands off TMS; GQT and The Archers. Keep paying the Licence Fee.
Simples.

Oh I don't know... it could have its advantages!
"Traffic Reports - sponsored by the Ablrate Eye in the Sky helicopter" has a certain ring to it.

I've always thought it odd that you have to pay for a tv license if you just watch, for example, Sky but how would they know? Personally (aside from the new bbc website) I think I get good value out of it. Good tv programmes imo with no adverts, I listen to R4 and enjoy the sport commentary. How much does netflix cost and what do you get for that? If you get in quick, £6 a month and so far we've seen: - Prison Break - 24 - Breaking Bad - Dexter - Homeland - Borgia - Rome - Orange is the new black - House of Cards (both versions) - Heroes and numerous films. The BBC is usually tainted by dumbed down slow, easy, ineffectual storylines, usually with a subtext of politically correct propaganda. The idea that the evil Manchester Guardian is about to be payrolled through the license fee is beyond disgusting. They should be shut down, not subsidised.

Reverting to the origin of this thread, I see that Reuters website now have rolling 'Latest Headlines' as did good old Auntie not so very long ago. Come on BBC we love you but you are slipping backwards.
