I was thinking of buying a chunk of shares in Drax recently, as an income producing equity investment. I didn't, because the Drax's income generation seemed to be somewhat unpredictable. However, for the time being Drax was on the list of shares whose share price I was following. Thus when I got back for collecting a parcel from the Post Office I found Drax's shares had dropped 25%, to an all time low, because the budget has removed the exemption from the climate change levy from renewable energy generators (about half of Drax's generation is biomass), making me glad that I hadn't bought. This presumably is going to affect the cash flows of the various GEIA-eligible loans on Assetz Capital.

Checking other share prices, Greencoat and Bluefield are down 0.5%, and EDF (which operates Britain's nuclear plants) actually up 1.5%.

Drax spent a small fortune, no actually a large fortune, a very very large fortune, on converting the plant to accept biomass fuel.
I can't see how they will ever get that money back, at least not in my lifetime, and I'm only 12½ .

This is not a political point (would have said it what ever party was causing the chaos) but yet again politicians are putting energy supply further in doubt in this country.... and as somebody who has spent a fair part of my working life dealing with Nuclear 'stuff' I know how short of leccie we are.
The new generation of Nuclear stations are stalled and no doubt yesterdays announcement was tied in with the oft reported 'Green Cr.p' comment.
The only form of energy that I see having secure 'g'ment funding' is shale gas. If I was a cynic I would wonder if this has anything to go with Gideon's family connections .....
It has been 'interesting' following the oft clueless path generation has been directed in the last 10 years (remember Dave's rooftop 'turbine'?) from micro generation to the position that we are now heading in where a very limited number of very large (non British) companies are to be relied on, funded by China ..... oh yes the Chinese economy is slowing rapidly and the share market there is in chaos!
Personally I think only the very brave would set up a new generation company in the UK, the future may not be that bright when night comes ......

I often wonder whether the best investment wouldn't be to buy a small Honda generator for the garden shed.
