I've just had the umpteenth PPI call.....well I assume it was that 'cos I only let it get to "Hello"!
It got me thinking if the voice was Joanna Lumley or Felicity Kendal (I think I'm showing my age here), I might be inclined to listen longer and it might make me feel happier about getting the unwanted call.
So, who would you like to call you?
ps One for the ladies Sean Connery!

Stephen Hawking. "According to my calculations, you have had an accident in the last 3 years that wasn't your fault..."
Bet you read that in a Stephen Hawking voice, didn't you?

I ask them for their company number, then pull up companies house to see who runs it, then ask if the chairman is in by name. Normally, by then, they start to panic because either they have the number wrong, or the Chairman is such a B@@@ Mousey they don't want to think about talking to him. Then I start talking about the legality of what they are doing and where they got my number. Soon gets you off the lists.

I was starting to get really cheesed off by these calls and had got bored with playing with them and so two months ago I bought from J*** L**** a "B* Digital Telephone and Answering Machine with Advanced Call Blocker Twin DEC" and have not had a single nuisance call since.
Edit: Now just over 4 months since installation and not a single time waster has interrupted my day, before then we were getting calls every week sometimes 2 or 3 per day.

Stay silent when you pick up the phone. If a human is at the other end they will say something, however most automated dialling machines won't activate until you speak. If it's automated the call usually cuts itself off within 20 seconds.

I usually pretend to be a burglar and say I can't stay to chat.

Stephen Hawking. "According to my calculations, you have had an accident in the last 3 years that wasn't your fault..." Bet you read that in a Stephen Hawking voice, didn't you? I had to call the Inland Revenue recently......after 35 minutes of q'ing I was expecting the usual "Press 1 if you....etc."......However, they have a new and "improved" system. A computerised voice asks a question. then picks up on key words you say and asks another question etc.....this completely threw me 'cos the voice didn't give me long enough to think what key words would best describe my issue.....after what seemed a lifetime and being tied to a chair with a light shining in my eyes, I was connected to a human being........after I explained my problem, I was promptly told I had the wrong dept., and would be transferred. I asked if I would be in the q again......they said no.........25 minutes later and 2 minutes of chat, problem solved.......cost of call £5.20ish........fortunately, tax saved £870......result!.........I did complain about the system, apparently everyone does. Now, should I call back and ask if the cost of the call is tax deductible.....erhh NO!

Say your registered on the Telephone Preference Service and do they realize that it is illegal to make unsolicited sales calls to this number - if that doesn't scare them, ask to speak to their Data Protection Officer.....

The TPS doesn't worry the cold callers one iota. They just 'forget' and/ or sell telephone numbers on to the next call center.

do they realize that it is illegal to make unsolicited sales calls to this number - if that doesn't scare them It doesn't scare them. Either: They believe that they are exempt because of (excuse) ranging from "Not selling anything, it's a survey" to "We already screen the numbers so your registration must have worn out, did you renew?" etc. Or: They really don't care. It's hard to say "I'm going to report you" when they've told you to "F--- off you sad t--t" and hung up (really!), from behind a Withheld/Unavailable number. I'd say they are not bothered in the slightest. This could be because TPS, Ofcom, ICO etc. are pretty worthless when it comes to prosecuting companies. The companies know this, and carry on regardless.

The companies know this, and carry on regardless. It does. The main thing is not to share your number in the first place and ensure you tick the box when you do. Registering on TPS does work, but you have to update frequently.

My brother once asked an overseas caller: "If I racially abused you, would you blacklist my number?"
"Yes."
"Well, I don't want to abuse you, as you are only trying to earn a living, but would you kindly mark me on your system as racially abusive."

Registering on TPS does work, but you have to update frequently. Dead wrong. The only people that put forward the idea that you have to "refresh" your registration are the liars that work for telesales companies. Please don't fall for their lies. Once registered on the TPS the number remains on the block list. Do I need to renew my registration with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS)
If you have registered a residential number or a number belonging to a sole trader or (except in Scotland) partnership, you do not need to renew.
Check here shows my number as registered, which it has been, without renewal, since the TPS came into existence.
