I gave up smoking on June the 24th (30 a day for 30 years). That's saving me on the order of £400 a month. So it's already saved me ~£800. The thing that amuses me is that, emotionally, this is far less important than the fact that I didn't understand the rules of one of my savings accounts (in that if you withdraw in any particular month you lose the interest in that month) and as a result I've lost out on ~£250 in interest. The rational part of me shakes its head, at me. And yet I still feel exactly the same way . What are your stories of silliness?

This isn't a money one,but is definitely a story of silliness. When I was young I was in the cub scouts for some years. At a point in each meeting we all had to swear allegiance to the leader by chanting "Akelar we'll do our best". Now, I'm from Liverpool, and for all those years I thought we were all chanting "OK la,we'll do our best"

For each month you invest that new £400 in P2P at 12% it is making you an extra £4 a month of income, for life if optimistic about P2P returns continuing at present levels, ignoring inflation. That and drawing on capital can let you retire years earlier than you otherwise could, or just bump up your holiday or other spending rates in retirement. Not claiming work expenses is one of my foibles.

I set myself a savings target each year, and monitor it weekly.
If things are going well and I'm above target I'm reluctant to make any one off purchases, for fear of dipping below the target, When the stock market goes t*ts up and my investments plunge I think "what difference does another grand make, I'm off to Tenerife for the week"
