As a year round motorcyclist I'm a little surprised to see motorcycles 'written off' with respect to time of year.
Motorcycles that could be used as security are not the types that get ridden* so time of year has little effect on their desirability and hence value.
That said, knowing models and makes is as always very important but I won't get into that nerdy territory here!
*It's 'interesting' looking up the dvla database to see just how many of the desirable motorcycles are SORNed on a permanent basis.
