So what has changed for the forum since yesterday when everything worked quickly? A compulsory update which has a bug in it? edit: I have just enabled my adblock, so now all works properly in Firefox. I now get this message at the top of the page: "Please consider supporting this website by disabling your ad-blocker. This website does not use audio ads, popups, or other annoyances. Thank you!"
Well there has been an annoyance today!
I use an adblocker which is turned off for this site. I also use a tracking blocker which is turned on for this site and every other site. I see ads but I have experienced no slowdown today. The tracking blocker is currently blocking 4 out of the 10 potential trackers.

This issue is affecting all forums hosted by Proboards - they have agreed there is an problem, and are investigating. If as we suspect its a third party ad server thats stalling, it may take a day or so to be resolved.

I am sure that it is rubiconproject.com or anvil.rubiconproject.com causing the problem.
My browser was fine until a few hours ago. My firefox default blocks third party cookies, which this probably is. If I divert all rubiconproject.com traffic to localhost my problem is fixed. Either the server is slow or reconfigured or a timeout setting is missing.

I am still OK with my adblock+ enabled. It was appalling without the adblock. As mentioned above, it was rubiconproject.com and anvil.rubiconproject.com which seemed to be causing the stalling problem.

There was no problem with a slow forum yesterday only “gobbledygook” and no emoticons / smileys when using Firefox, both of which are now sorted, t’internet is flying today.
Thank you to those who suggested Ghostery.

Proboards are saying that the issue only affects the UK (great !) and the root cause is a DDoS attack on their largest UK advertising partner ( ... whom we appear to have identified as Rubicon). Performance might continue be intermittent for a few days, but seems fine as I type this. For those attempting to block calls to rubicon at source I've noticed optimized-by.rubiconproject.com is another related sub-domain.

Have had issues with rubiconproject causing sites to be slow in the past, have followed the advice here and installed Ghostery which seems to have made everything nice and speedy

Can confirm that I'm blocking these, by standard, and saw no problems with the forum through this period.
