Panic over. Channel 4 has got the job, and will apparently broadcast without ad breaks. stevet, I had previously estimated you to be a gentlemen of taste and erudition...

I used to be a big fan, but these days I just skim highlights; the (too many) races are (in general) moderately boring, and most of the excitement is the off-track bickering and back-biting. Perhaps we should given them all the same cars, or rotate drivers around cars, or just go watch touring car (hah!) racing instead? However well done C4 for picking it up, I wonder if they picked up the commentary team as well?

I agree with the rest as well - too many too boring races. I'm not that keen on the number funded by tyrants of one sort or another and with no history and little local interest. If they insist on complicated new engines (which I like) or stupid tyres (which I don't) then they should allow a substantial increase in the amount of testing.

I only went to see one Grand Prix live, this one www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssFZC3cldIIMy every day transport then was a car which was driven in the 1922 French Grand Prix by Count Zborowski and I wish I had kept it having sold it for £125. I still watch all the modern ones.

A few years ago even, I heard an interview with a Ferrari mechanic or possibly race team director, and he was asked something like "could you make a car that would never crash and always win"? And he said yes, just stick a separate electric motor on eack of the wheels, and let the computer run it from the pit lane. If there had to be a driver in it make sure they couldn't fiddle with anything. Since then I've thought of the drivers as being there on sufferance.

The only interesting bit of Formula 1 is the crashes, and there are fewer and fewer -especially fatal ones.

I've just thought of a new twist to add some extra interest to what has, we all agree, become a rather less interesting sport these days: respray all the cars on the grid and start the race immediately. Then we can watch paint dry as well as tyres getting thinner and fuel getting lower.

Same with driver less cars majority of accidents are caused by driver error anyway
