Did a bit of research and discovered that the post war Labour government banned the building of any private homes! Mad social engineering. Sounds like something the current labour leader would be all in favour of.

Did a bit of research and discovered that the post war Labour government banned the building of any private homes! Mad social engineering. Maybe....or maybe not. I was not aware of that particular nugget of information and so am not making a judgement. But we should be careful not to put a decision made then into the context of today. I could for example see a logic behind this that could have been very valid. There would have been - and indeed was - a very considerable need to replenish housing stock destroyed during the war. Much of the destroyed housing stock was in poor areas e.g. east end of London. Private developers might well have viewed that there was more profit to be had in building higher end housing out of the reach of those that needed it the most. That would have sucked much needed skilled labour - of which there was also likely to have been a shortage of - out of the available pool, which would have had a significant drag on the ability to replace - dare I use that word - working class housing stock. I'm not defending it, but it may have made considerably more sense at the time than might appear to be the case today. And yes I'm sure JC would love to resurrect the idea, probably along with rent caps and many other things which will have unintended but entirely predictable consequences which will be contrary to the supposedly 'desired' outcome.

Crikey! I do hope JC does not read this forum - I would hate to think I had given him the idea.
