Call me picky, but as far as I can tell the 'balance' number shown at the top of the home page actually isn't my Balance .. e.g. if I put £100 of parts for sale, the 'balance' drops by £100, which is clearly whacky - I still own them, until they are sold. In fact 'Balance' appears to be the total of (Live Parts and Available Funds) .. what about adding in 'Parts for Sale', guys?! Or does 'Balance' have some SS-unique meaning, accountancy-wise?

Not picky at all. It makes it a right PITA when selling multiple loans on the SM; where the balance changes as I list the investment (buy has yet to sell), and I go on to sell other investments you can easily loose track and end up sell more than you want . In accountancy, the balance is the amount that remains in a deposit account; so I guess that SS treat all our investments as if they were in a hypothetical "deposit account", and that when you have an investment for sale it is not in this "deposit account". This is from memory from my time at the DIY Business School, so I could be wrong!
