The mods have beaten me to it - in the past few weeks I have been thinking this forum is getting less friendly and more robust so i welcome the email I've just received from the mods.
I think the 'robust' chats may be fun for those taking part but are hardly welcoming to outsiders.
I am more worried about the endless cycle of 20/20 hindsight and very heavy pressure on anyone that dares to represent platforms on this forum. If platforms do engage with us, the endless 'we should be told/we should have a say in this' seems to be getting louder and louder and must surely be a disincentive for platforms to engage. We are not a management board!

I agree. There are some relatively recent contributors that seem to like the sound of their own voices and treat this forum like the platforms' customer service portal, badgering their representatives for responses (often to questions asked and answered already) and updates, when a little patience and research would be a wiser approach. I worry that platforms will simply hunker down and stop engaging if all they get for their efforts is a mountain of junk in return.

I know from experience how hard it is to moderate a forum and so far I found this forum very constructive, useful and mainly polite.
Therefor I'd like to give a big thumbs up to the moderators - they must be doing a good job in setting and keeping up this atmosphere.

Do you think that the authors thought their comments were "puerile drivel" themselves, or do you think they just had a different opinion? Surely it is this sort of language that the mods want to discourage.

Personally the positive interaction with the platforms is about a third of the value of this place imo. Another third is the crowd due diligence and education from people with more experience than I have, either in p2p or other fields. The last third is the general interaction etc.
I suspect I made one of the most ill considered posts in 2015.... Which I quickly tidied up and the one person who had quoted also tidied. So I don't have much in the way of moral high ground.
That said, I do feel that a balance has to be struck between suggesting, influencing and cajoling platforms. We have the ultimate sanction if we choose... We can move our money elsewhere. Robust debate and challenge is one thing, at times it had felt that parts of here were trying to set platforms direction which feels to me to be to far.
Getting slightly closer to the point, if the community descends into personal attacks etc, it will drive away the interaction with platform reps, along with folk who dislike the falling signal to noise ratio. Effectively removing a lot of the point for here.
So, in summary, I think that the mods do a difficult and sometimes thankless task well in an environment where there are a lot of strong opinions.

I've said it elsewhere recently, but feel it's worthy of repetition: the beauty of freedom of expression is the that it makes it so much easier to decide who's views we respect, and who's should be treated with a 'pinch of salt'! Like it or not, I'm finding it hard to believe that I would ever have any respect for the views of the individual in question. Perhaps I should have made it clear that some of the contents of the posts described in the reasoning for the latest banishment as being, at times, "aggressive,abusive, inappropriate and offensive", were seen by me, and me alone, as I described them, and I never intended to imply that others would, or should, view, or describe them thus. I would contend that there will be few who peruse this forum seeking enlightenment and the honest, considered and well argued views of others, many far more experienced than themselves, either expect, or want, to be confronted by a contributor's descriptions of his wife's anatomical abnormalities, amongst all his other verbiage. If you have not had the very dubious 'pleasure' of reading the posts in question, they can still be viewed here. Return, once digested, and air your opinions. I'm sure subjective adjectives will be tolerated; I would recommend 'crass' as being particularly apt. I, at least, will raise not a single word of objection if you still believe my description was unfounded. If any Mod. feels the language / tone used was, in any way, out of order I will concede to their judgement.

I have found the comments on the forum are usually of a very high standard, and while some people do cross the line a gentle reminder is usually enough to resolve any transgressions.
The moderators are doing an exceptional job given that they are volunteers and don't get paid.

I find this forum extremely useful and informative, and there's no way I'd be as heavily (over-?)invested in the P2P segment without it. For that, I owe huge thanks to the community here.
And that's exactly what makes this forum SO useful - the community. A dry, purely technical forum would die. Critical mass is, well, critical to getting any kind of a forum going and, just as importantly, keeping it going. A bit of banter around the dry technicalities is what makes people come back and read more. It's the difference between sitting in a financial lecture or going to the pub for a chat with an accountant and a lawyer and a banker and...
Yes, it's easy for that line to be crossed, and I've had a gentle nudge or two from the admins for doing it. They do a sterling job, and the balance here is broadly bob-on. Flying pigs, grumpy gorillas, the Governator, and many of the other characters here provide the spark of vitality necessary to fuel that critical mass. When you have a boor who can't take a hint, though, the landlord needs to step in and bar them.

Just in case there is any lingering misconception, the sole inspiration for my comment/description was the now-departed, ursine contributor, and if he were here now I would repeat it to the forum equivalent of his face. You are absolutely right, the banter (together with the humour) is an essential element of this forum. Long may it continue.

You may perceive a post to be 'puerile drivel', you are entitled to your opinion. But do you think that posting a reply using that term can really be described as "polite and constructive" as is required by the first rule of the forum?
