This is a really simple question, I am sure, but as a newbie to p2p lending I would be grateful for clarification. On my Zopa loan sheet some lenders have 'names' then there are some with Alphanumeric strings. What is the latter? is this because Zopa dont want to identify the lender. Any insight would be helpfull.

Any insight would be helpfull. You've got it really, in the early days it could be very inter-personal. Borrowers could and did log into the old talk.zopa forum (Now Read Only see resources above for link) and talk about there situations, ask & answer questions, and they had whatever names they wanted to give themselves. But perhaps because of regulation by FCA and other things Zopa started to give the Alphanumeric names a year or two ago.

So am I right in thinking the alphanumeric strings belong to individuals who took out loans two years plus ago ? Or is there something fundamental I am not understanding. Thank you for your response btw

Thank you for your response btw I think the borrowers only had to be registered recently to get the uuid codes, for ones registered before that if they take out a new loan now they will still keep their original user name. I last loaned to a non-hex user on 06-10-2015
On the old forum ( and I presume this will continue on the p2p one ) lenders were careful not to give out the borrower chosen name when discussing loans, as they may have used the same ID on other sites and could be identified.
Edit - looking at the amounts ( < £10 ) the one on the 6/10/15 may have been an RR purchase, the last £10 loan to a non-hex borrower was on 2/1/15. It was allowed for borrowers to pay off an existing loan by taking out a new one so that also be why you have non-hex lenders.

Gricehead, below, tells me it was Jan or Feb 2014 (Thanks gricehead ) when they first started using the codes. Any NEW Borrowers after that got the codes but any returning ones (coming back for a second or third loan perhaps) kept their original self given names. So whenever I see a human name today I know they're a repeat customer. Not sure what names new Lenders have though... anyone know, I imagine they can still select their own name.

Without checking I think it must've been Jan or Feb 2015 when they first started using the codes, thought it seems longer. Late by a year 20 January 2014.

New lenders get an alphanumeric too. I referred a friend and having explained they would get to chose a name, they didn't!

As far as I know, Zopa doesn't specifically have "lenders" and "borrowers", they have "members". A "member" might be a borrow at some point in time and a lender at another point, and possibly even both at the same time depending on cashflow requirements and eligibility. Perhaps they've gone further towards customising the user interface so that members who've only done one activity or the other (but not both) don't see both the "My Zopa loan" and "My Zopa lending" sections?
