The forum has storage space constraints, and if we go beyond them we will need to pay real £s for more of the stuff, which I suspect none of us want. Most of the space currently taken up is used by images, for instance those in the current car thread. The reason for this is that people are uploading image files to the forum rather than linking to images, which takes up no space. If you click on the "Add Attachment" button you will upload the file to the forum. Now doing this is fine for P2P related material, for instance tax guidance docs, but pictures of fighter jets (like I have posted) or the ever present internet cat meme upset the internet goblins (and other esoteric fauna) that keep everything working. A better way to do it is to click on this:- and then provide a link to the image you want (just copy it into the Image URL field). This means that the images themselves need to be uploaded to an image hosting site first. This is trivial, and free. You don't even need to sign up to anything or register. A good example of such a site is imgur.com (be warned, if you like pictures of cute cats you may never return). When looking at the image hosted in imgur right click on it and select "Copy Image Address" (in Chrome, Copy Image Location in Firefox - other browsers may vary slightly) and then paste it into the box illustrated above. Wherever possible please link to images rather than upload them directly. As it is those goblins I mentioned are having to write a script to archive images, which is a shame, I suspect some of those pictures of old cars and bikes bring back fond memories for a fair few of us .

If there is a picture which is being used more than once, is it possible to store it once and change occurrences to links? And can this be automated?

Probably, and probably but.... why should we when there's an entire multi-billion dollar industry dedicated to the free hosting of images?

As registerme alluded to in his post, we are going to have to write a script to intelligently manage the attachments storage space, and as part of that, yes we can look at cross-linking of duplicated files, though whether the effort of that is worthwhile is another matter.

Simple solution - block people from uploading attachments here.

Simple solution - block people from uploading attachments here. We're not against the idea if it's useful & very relevant to a p2p related discussion. The issue is when it isn't (esp in the chat section & I have been guilty in the past myself before putting my mod hat on recently & being made aware of the constraints aforementioned so will refrain in future unless necessary).

Simple solution - block people from uploading attachments here. You cannot do that. I had to upload various photos to show what I was talking about. These would relate to problems on various platforms and would clarify what one is seeing on screen. Other photos which are not essential can be deleted with no harm. In such cases I cannot see how the linking can work. I cannot link to a file on my computer. Is there another way? Mods: What about making a size limit for photos, even essential ones? Today we can still get good quality, readable photos which are compressed and therefore do not take much storage space.

You can easily upload images to imgur.com then just paste the generated link.

The issue is that if a picture is needed for explanation that it needs to appear. adrianc suggesting blocking the ability to upload images (without suggesting alternatives), which for me was the only way to do it. ABLrateandy suggested imageguru, which I will explore. Thanks (BTW : Is anyone getting problems with getting members links to work? Also there are some odd server errors popping up.)

Simple solution - block people from uploading attachments here. Tweak that to block images being uploaded only and I suspect you may have a winner. Files like scripts for parsing transaction logs, template spreadsheets all still work and images can still work via a hosting site. the only exception I could think of is images on the pink pages which might need to be more private, hence the restrictions on that sub forum, but off the top of my head I can't recall any / many images there.

Sorry... i just wanted to see some old cars.. Just google for them? Yea... but.... no personal connection there... when someone posts a pic of a car/bike and adds there own personal connection.. its special, brings a tear to the mincers.
