Some progress, now I get a revoked SSL certificate error. That means that their request to their SSL certificate provider to revoke their old certificate has been processed. If I temporarily disabled the check for certificate revocation in my browser I got to their usual update in progress notice page.
Just need to wait for the new certificate to be in place and for any other work to be done.

4.55am (yes that is sad!) and the 'site update in progress' screen is showing.
