Hi Guys
I see that the "Chat" section has become a bit of burden on the MODs, and I wonder if it may be due to the statement attached to that section...
I would imagine the above text was placed when the forum was first created, due to the forum creators envisioning the "Chat Section" becoming a place of light-hearted (non-p2p) banter. However, I think that you may want to amend the above text to be more specific...
I note that many Brexit threads were edited and deleted by MODs (quite reasonably IMHO) due to inflammatory posts. Also, some recent jokes (on the "Jokes" Thread) were removed, because they were considered inappropriate (I didn't see these pre-deleted posts, but do I trust the MODs had good reason to remove them).
However, despite the above moderation, there was little to no illegal conduct from those users, just banter that may be considered interoperate and/ or provocative to the wider community.
Please don't read my above text wrong; I don't disagree with any of the Moderation I've seen on this forum, and completely understand that any moderation in the chat section presumably is in line with the forum rule "Please be polite and constructive". However, I do think that the current statement attached to the chat section just needs amending to remind us forum members of this rule (Please be polite and constructive) before they click and proceed to "talk about anything legal(!) here"...

I appreciate the need to prevent legally dubious comments and avoid offending sensibilities within reason, I hold my hand up to recently posting a link to a site with one or two items that the mods considered risqué and consequently deleted. However, IMHO hints of po-faced political correctness have appeared when genuine concerns have been raised about immigration in some threads. I don’t think for one minute that anyone who expressed unease about this topic advocated a total end to immigration, just that it be better controlled and there was certainly no racist intent.

Mod hat on. yorkshireman, although your opinion is valid, and we mods strive not to enforce our own opinions when moderating comments, we also want to maintain the focus of the forum - which is p2p. Political events in the world can affect p2p, and we all want to discuss those implications. The problem for us mods is where to draw the line on how wide-ranging those discussions should become. The people who moderate this forum have had considerable pressure put on their personal time and judgement in deciding how long to allow some quite rancorous exchanges to continue. Brexit affects p2p if there is a change in lending habits or policy. The subject of immigration has been a major part of the Brexit debate, and can therefore be considered to have an indirect affect on p2p by swaying public opinion. The difference between the two threads that discussed Brexit was that 'Brexit - Impact on P2P' stayed within our preferred boundaries, whereas the other threads did not. There are, no doubt, other fora on the internet that are set up to allow allcomers to talk about anything that comes to mind - and we are all free to use them. This forum has a narrower focus and the mod team are determined to maintain that. We have discussed closing down the chat thread altogether and some contributors to this forum would applaud that move - but on balance it would be a very dry discussion if there were no mildly diverting comments and observation on life - in a section that can be ignored if preffered. The title of the chat thread is self explanatory, it is not meant to be a political debating forum.

Brexit may or may not impact on P2P in a number of ways, therefore it is a legitimate topic if forum rules are respected and the mods are even handed in their decisions.
