Starting a sticky for hints and tips for forum usage. Comments on what should be added. I'll start with one.
* Proactive notification of PMs received and other "events": to receive notifications to your registered email address when an event occurs (such as receiving a PM (Personal Message)): Profile tab -> Edit Profile -> Notifications Select your notifications as desired and save. * Modifying/hiding your birthday. ProBoards require you warrant that you are 13+ year of age. Its mechanism for doing so on registration is to require DOB input. After registration profile settings allow you to both hide your birthday but also to change your accounts birthday providing you warrant you are 13+.

Just to note that PM stands for Private Message. Messages you've received can be accessed through the "Messages" menu at the top of the screen. Messages can be sent either from a user's profile page ("Send Message") or from the action menu at the top of each post (the icon), then "Member | Send Message".

Is there a definitive way to get the forum to remember what post you've read last? For me it seems pretty random as to whether next time I visit the thread, I start at the beginning or where I left off. I use Firefox 29.0. I know for definite that it doesn't work if I use the back arrow. I have to navigate using the forum menu bar but even that isn't full-proof.

If so are you always logged in? I find the blue "NEW" link is very sensitive - you have to click right on it otherwise it loads the thread at the first post. The Recent Posts link is also good.

Yeah, I'm always logged in. I think it must be your point regarding where you click on the "new" button. I'll take a little more care and see how that goes.

How can I FOLLOW a thread, so I get an email if it's been updated (same as I get for threads I've contributed to)?
Thanks

Thanks The best this forum software can do seems to be to send you one alert when a thread is updated - it doesn't then send any more alerts for that thread until you visit the forum again. To set it up, turn on "Email" notifications in "Profile", "Edit Profile", "Notifications", "when a bookmark is updated". Then "Bookmark" the thread from the "Actions" drop down, top left.

Hi snowgoose!
You have updated threads.
The thread What's on the SM? that you participated in has been updated by john334.
I just got this by e-mail. Darned if I can find the thread. Instructions please.
Edit Ignore this. I just accidentally clicked on the thread name in the e-mail and it took me straight there.
