Is this much of a hassle? Is it worth it for someone who only accesses the site from their home computer?

I'd say it's worth it
It would help prevent someone trying to access your account from a different device/IP address

I have it turned on since last year. Not much hassle, works fine.

It would be nice to allocate multiple phone numbers, as long as they are all added and verified it is up to the user to add, keep secure and use the appropriate number after all. Google let me use my landline (a phone call) as backup and even allow me to opt to get my mobile called if I want to avoid the text message. savingstream

Thanks guys. Do you need to reauthorise the primary device every two weeks? I only ever use my desktop at home.

If your mobile reception is patchy or you have any other concerns regarding receiving the SMS token, one work around is to have it sent to a public SMS message service. Any SMS's sent to the service provider's number is posted on a public website - no registration required. The webpage is public, but only the token number is sent by SMS (no other identifying information) so it is useless to anyone else unless they know the account for which the token has been requested and know your personal login info. I often do this when I travel abroad and likely to use a local SIM (there does not seem to be anyway to forward SMSs unlike voice calls).
There are a number of sites that offer this service - just google "receive sms online free". I think people usually use the service to avoid having to provide 3rd parties with their own phone numbers for privacy/avoid spam etc.
