The kids of today with their digital cameras, selfies etc. would probably not appreciate this..........a couple of weeks ago I was scouring the interweb for stuff on my old schools, swimming club, etc......sadly as any recording equipment was rarely used, even paper records were not kept and photographs do not appear anywhere and my parents didn't have a movie camera I didn't find anything............until I stumbled across a national boy scout event at Gilwell Park that I took part in way back in 1968..........now I vaguely remember seeing cameras but didn't think anything of it at the time........but I have now found out those movie cameras weren't just proud parents, oh no no no............. they were in fact Pathe News......I can not describe the joy I felt finding this film even though there is no sound and I only appear for about 1.5s as I think there were about 200 competitors...........so here is me aged 13.5yrs old! linkps I bet nobody bothers unless of course someone else here also took part .......in which case......enjoy! For the record I did quite well that year I was in the top 10!!!!

Wonderful. Scoutmaster in a greatcoat. Total lack of H&S. All very basic. I would have been cubs that year, moved up to scout about a year later. Out troop was based at St Johns, Upper Norwood. Not sure anyone took part in that event.

I know what you mean about the greatcoat, I think he was more than just a Scoutmaster...... had a little delve into the web to see if I could find some info, drew a blank as usual!....but I did find this diary of events, milestones etc. link

Were you the one limping into the first aid hut? Go on, tell us the minutes and seconds you appear on the reel.
Those were the days (tho mine were a decade earlier) when a sports bike with derailleur gears was the thing - none of that Sturmey-Archer stuff fit only for the women going shopping, the insurance man with his cycle clips, the vicar and the girls. (Not sexist, that's how it was). Still have a sports bike, but now I've got 15 gears instead of 4. And I'm still not as fast as I was.

(Not sexist, that's how it was). Still have a sports bike, but now I've got 15 gears instead of 4. And I'm still not as fast as I was. No I was not injured at all. I was no.30, and I still have the hat!! which usually I wore when night fishing. When I was entered by my troop leader, I had never heard of the sport and my google didn't work in those days . All I remember being told was it was like a cross country with bikes. So I turned up with my 5 speed racing bike fitted with 28" X 1.125" tyres which had 2 disadvantages.......1 My chain came off at least 3 times.......and 2 The downhill left hand corner @ 2 min. 30ish sec. (steeper than it looks) was not exactly suitable to my bike tyre tread pattern!......I'm surprised there was not any really serious injuries 'cos that hill just keeps on going 'til you reach King George's Reservoir. These days there would be loads of straw bales there!!! There was another race the following year and I improved my finish to 6th......this was due to my 'experience' as I put together a purpose built bike during the week before made up of spares I borrowed, it had fatter tyres and just a single gear. The team was nothing like what you see on F1......it was a couple of scout masters, about 4 scouts and a pre 1960's Bedford Dormobile that usually had to be bump started!!

Regret you were going too fast for me to catch the number! I still use my 27" x 1+1/8" bike on footpaths, humping it over stiles etc. But we grew up when boys were still boys and this was the norm.
