Hi, As we had hijacked this thread (with contributions from registerme , samford71 , Maestro amongst others) I have created a new one. I am particularly interested in buying puts on long Gilt and US 10 year. I would also be interested in longer term options (more than 6 months) on equities if anyone has any ideas. I assume that LIFFE (or whatever it is now called) still has options on the gilt future; what is the best way to access this for a retail individual? IG doesn't seem to have any option on Gilts. Did I dream it or did there used to be traded warrants on equities (I know it didn't end well in Japan)? BTW happy to discuss any vol, etc.

Hi Bigfoot. I'm not a savvy investor so to speak (not educated in it, just learn as I go). My current predicament must be being felt by a lot of people though.
P2P - Rates coming down, and some of them stepping out of their specific expertise due to competition/targets. I'm personally over invested or up to max comfort level with all of them, some I want to leave but have no home for the cash. Stockmarket - Closed my equity mutual funds last month as I think market is waiting for the collapse - I put money on Trump for the election, but expected immediate problems with markets, not happened yet. PM's - Slammed as much into Gold & Silver as I feel comfortable with over the past month, although last week hurt a lot! Potential bargains to be had if under invested in metals for people that want to hedge. Bank/Traditional - not worth mentioning, even the TSB's and Santander good ones are now stepping back from offering anything decent for small amounts of savings.
I don't know enough about Gilts etc, but I do know it's a horrible time to be a saver at the minute. The world is forcing us to make big gambles and it is really annoying me. I look forward to learning more when more informed people than myself jump onto the thread that you have kindly started.

Search for TARP warrants. If USD interest rates go up eventually there could be some interesting leverage effect on JPM, PNC, or even BAC. AIG had quite a run lately.

options on gilt futures but these options tend to be quite short-dated (3-months or so). These would do for a start. Does anyone know the best way to trade these as a private retail player - my size won't be large enough to interest a private bank.

In my experience IG consistently provide the widest range of instruments across the spectrum. They currently offer short and long gilt Dec 16 and Mar 17 contracts. Spreads are reasonable and the minimum nominal size on the gilt contracts is circa £20k with 0.2% margin. They also offer ishare gilt etfs.

But sadly IG don't seem to offer options on any of these. Nor do several of the other obvious spread bet/CFD platforms I tried. If you know of a platform that has Gilt Options I would be most grateful.

*** HEALTH WARNING *** I am in great danger of providing a wrong steer here (so samford71 or others please correct me if necessary) but in my old shop short term interest rate products and FX were part of the same business. Have you considered FX products? It might not be exactly what you are looking for, but it might provide a suitable proxy.... *** HEALTH WARNING ***
