I suspect the comments about dumbing down to the ZOPA model are probably correct, FC apparently can't make a bid model work (due to technical incompetence? The model seems to work elsewhere .. ebay for one) For FC to follow eBay, there would be two auction types - the "auction" mode, where you can bid different amounts, but only a single item is being sold at a time (effectively "whole loans" allowing bidding rather than first-come-first-served), or a "fixed price" mode, where there can be multiple identical items (like the current partial property loans) or a single item sold to the first person to buy ("whole loans" as currently implemented). eBay stopped offering multiple-item variable-price auctions (which they referred to as "dutch auctions") some time ago: pages.ebay.co.uk/help/buy/buyer-multiple.html - and even when those were possible, I don't think they allowed for hundreds or thousands of winning bids (I forget what the maximum number of identical items that could be sold was in the "dutch" format - possibly as little as 10 before you were forced to use a fixed-price listing?) Having said that, there certainly do exist instances of "elsewhere" that similar bids need to be matched on a similar pace - the London Stock Exchange for one...

Weird, seeing as Yorkshire is now off dial-up! Something's been planted up there which is a FC-ing blocker. I've had no trouble at all today down in the sunny Midlands. PS Virgin Media b'band, Firefox, potassium fuelled keyboard.

504: Gateway Timeout 502: Bad Gateway
Both of these have "nginx/1.6.2" tags on them. Seeing as I don't run nginx, nor does my firewall or router, these messages are coming from Funding Circle. Therefore, they are browser independent.
What they do depend on is the site being crazily busy just as an auctioncomes to an end, and then the site goes into meltdown/shutdown for a few minutes. Happened on a few auctions today.

Yes, these errors come from FC, or from the cloud servers that get you to FC. Yout can add some 500 error codes which I got lots of last night.

That's a bit odd -- you are logged in through Chrome (left hand) and IE (right hand), and you're telling me the errors ONLY come up on the Chrome side, while IE is working correctly?
That might be useful information, if FC were looking at fixing this issue.
... which they just might want to do at some point!
I wonder if IE is (despite instructions otherwise) cacheing something that allows the site to work when the cloud servers are feeling unwell.
Or alternatively, is Chrome (and Firefox) cacheing something that STOPS it working. E.g. caching an IP address/session handle or something that refers to a defunct member of the cloud cluster, and under IE would be correctly refreshed to point at a live one?

It must be summat like that .. I can get them on one of my two IE sessions, while my partner's session (same router, same everything, except login) works fine at the same time. Not often - usually the collapse in synch, but sometimes. I blame half baked cookies, and fog where there should be cloud ...

That's a bit odd -- you are logged in through Chrome (left hand) and IE (right hand), Exactly that - you obviously are psychic as i have dual screens with IE on the rhs and chrome on the left - i don't log in simultaneously. I reckon its cache/cookie type issues - but can't be bothered to go find my FC entries and delete them. If FC cared they'd PM me and try to see if my problem was a wider problem, the solution to which would benefit them and their customers. Yeh, right. JP

What and where is this 'gateway' which is preventing FC from serving its customers. It seems to be 'bad' much of the time when logged in resulting in pages and parts which cannot be seen, and now it refuses to open and times out to deny access completely. This makes FC seem very poor. They should complain about the gate and get it fixed or use a different and better gate.
Maybe I should start a collection to help FC get a new gate. Maybe there are government grants - or we forumites could make a special fund-raising band track? "It's xmas time ... etc"
