My question is, if the Scottish vote for independence, will the current enthusiasm for pulling out of the EU still be as strong?

Just had a thought - England leaves the UK. Scotland gets to keep the membership of the EC that they want, accepting the European currency, which will please Europe, and England takes Sterling, leaves the EU and becomes Europe's new dodgy tax haven now Switzerland has given up on it. Haven't figured it what happens to Wales and Northern Ireland but that would be Scotland's problem as Senior member of the UK. We've got to do it before the Scots have their referendum though.

And we get Nigel Farage as PM... "I think I'd better think it it out again" in the words of the song. Hoist by my own Farage. :-(

Really interesting article but, I'm still more persuaded by the 'united' argument'

Really interesting article but, I'm still more persuaded by the 'united' argument' Me too, but there is a groundswell of parochialism at the moment and quite a disconnect between politicians and the electorate. I've always held the belief that I didn't mind if a significant proportion of eligible voters didn't bother as it made my vote count for more. There must come a point though when the nonvoters cease to cooperate with the establishment altogether, and anarchy is not something into which we should sleepwalk. If regional elections revive the public's interest in politics perhaps some sort of English 'devolution light' would be desirable. The Cornish and Northumbrian regional identities are already forming, no doubt others would follow if it was offered.

I've always quite liked the idea of being able to vote for an "Anarchy Party", but I've never found anyone willing to found such a thing.

I have come to the conclusion that letting Scotland go it’s own way can only be to England’s advantage. Less subsidies, no Scottish MP’s at Westminster voting on exclusively English issues and less probability of Labour governments.

We must be careful what we wish for. The gods have a way of punishing us with wishes fulfilled but not quite as we expected. A Tory government without a powerful opposition will probably become lazy and incompetent (Ok, more lazy and more incompetent) and might split into a left and right wing (oops, already has - UKIP). The government focus would still be London-centric, because that's where the money is, so the provinces might be no better off than they are now. The 'Game of Thrones' scenario plays out in my head as a war between the P2P barons with Andrew Holgate as Ned Stark (don't tell him how it turns out for him though) and FC as the Lanisters :-)

My mind wandered and I finished my post too soon. The English and the Scots provide each other with a very valuable sanity check and we will both be worse off apart, regardless of any of the supposed financial gains or losses proposed. The Scots moulded all that Great Britain has become - the empire and the industrial revolution to name only the most obvious arenas. Neither country would have achieved so much alone.
