The fat lady hasn't quite finished singing... www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-39055233My gut feel is that there's the usual mix of truth and handy-political-stick. For many, it's certainly going to move them along the scale of viability - those who are already struggling won't cope, those who are doing OK may start struggling, those who are doing well will continue to do well. If I look at a prominent shop that's been empty for a while in one of our local towns, the rent is a bit over £900/mo for about 55m2 of shop floor and 7m of frontage. The rates bill would be about £325/mo. Add on all the other costs of doing business, and even a 50% rise in that is not going to add a substantial percentage to the overall numbers. The living wage is going to be a far bigger direct hit.

He's looking a little old and can't decide whether to wear a tie or not, whether we should have nuclear weapons or not, and whether we should be in Europe or not, so best not to bother him with details like this. After all, shopkeepers are mini capitalists - so bad, but suffering under Tory government - so good. It was all so much more clear cut in the seventies.

The one I looked at had an RV of £10,500 - so they would actually be seeing a reduction from 75% of the normal full rates to 0%... Assuming the RV didn't change... But if the RV went above £15k, they would be paying 100%.

/mod hat off
The whole business rates thing is ludicrous IMO .. if you're going to tax a business (which you need to) then tax it on turnover, or profits, or energy consumption, or effluent produced or something. Taxing it on the nominal (rental) value of ONE of it's assets (the property it occupies) is senseless .. An Amazon distribution centre, or a Robotised car assembly plant, paying less than my corner bookstore? Madness ..
