While many investment trusts have gone through the wall st crash, world wars & other crisis some financial and some not they have survived and are still around. Many of them hold gold as a safety net so there does seem a good reason to hold it.But not sure in a complete break down of the monetary system it would have the same impact due to the other problems we would be facing. But you would think with all the borrowing and govt. debt in the world that something has to give one day. As an oldie i do not really understand Bitcoin(only how much i could have made over the last couple of years)but seeing on the BBC today about a so called war within the Bitcoin community, can someone explain to me what stops it from becoming a Nokia or Kodak type of thing where some one invents a new currency and it becomes worthless? Good final point macq. With all the alternatives that are being concocted in the ether it is a speculative arena. With banks and financial institutions now using blockchain I wonder how long until they introduce their own crypto currency for inter company trading?

Have to agree with this. Just imagine if there were a total financial banking system meltdown ie. nothing coming out of cash machines, all credit and debit cards refused etc etc. Well if that were to actually happen, there would be a global panic and blood on the streets .... literally. No-one getting paid ?? Just imagine it. Shop looting everywhere and a total societal breakdown. Probably lose our utility services , so no electricity, no gas, no water ?? So how exactly would Gold help us in those circumstances ? Would we seriously expect someone (who?) to swap our gold coins for some of his/her goods and services in such a panic stricken environment ? In such an environment what people would want , is drinking water, food and shelter. Gold would be of as much use as a hole in the head.

It would appear this thread about distribution of net wealth is heading towards "how to build your own nuclear bunker" and "stock up for the end of the world as we know it" 😲

And don't forget some kind of water purifying system etc etc

Excluding the usual... in round numbers...
55% S&S&B funds 35% cash (keep trying to reduce this) 10% p2p -10% cash (i.e. Stooze pot or similar)
I have minor exposure to property and gold etc through some of the shares, but am planning on potentially increasing that at my next rebalancing this year, or at least the amount allocated to new investments.
