The Forum has reached over 91% of it’s free 200 MB attachment limit, and we are getting a constant warning about this. Should we exceed our limit the Pro Boards software apparently simply stops any more attachments from being posted. Unfortunately, we only have blunt instruments with which manage our attachments without spending excessive amounts of time going through the individual posts and removing the attachments. We currently have in excess of two thousand (2000) posts with attachments on the Forum; around 200 of them have attachments greater than 200 KB and together they account for over half our total storage allocation. Given that we cannot easily delete attachments by any particular variables (date or size for example) as they are not stored or accessible in that way, we have decided to reduce the limit for attachments from 1 MB to 200 KB and the number of attachments per post from 3 to 1. We will carry this out next weekend (29/30th July) to give everyone a chance to review their attachments and decide if they want to keep a copy of the information should they not already have done so. This action should delete the attachments in the aforementioned 200 posts which currently exceed this ‘new’ limit and reduce our storage to the 50% level. If it does not we will delete them from the 200 posts manually over that weekend. Going forward this should also help keep the situation under control for some time. However, we’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that the forum does not have or make any money, that it is maintained entirely by volunteers, and that you can assist by posting images rather than attachments wherever possible – see here. The use of this mechanism has increased significantly in the last year, and we’d like to thank those that make sure they do post linked images, it has certainly helped with the storage situation, and delayed our arrival at this point

How does one view one's attachments? You do a Search for What - at least one of the words = 'attachment' & Who - guff (or whoever) leave posts made by 'everybody' in situ. It's not perfect because it includes any post/s with the word attachment, but will hopefully bring up most of your posts with actual attachments. This one's yours link - I think

the people who posted those large attachments could be asked to re-upload them on an external site.

Admin For clarification, will you only be deleting attachments larger than 200 KB this weekend?

Admin For clarification, will you only be deleting attachments larger than 200 KB this weekend? Yes that’s correct only attachments larger than 200 KB will be deleted. However, it’s a case of every little helps, so if you are happy to delete the smaller ones or re-upload them as images or links then so much the better. Someone else has just asked how you can tell their size so for anyone else who wants to know if you have a post with an attachment edit it and then edit attachments and you will see the size. Here’s one of mine. This is the only post of mine left with an attachment. After I opened it with the 'edit' function (top right cog wheel) I then selected the 'Edit Attachment' box - top right next to the cog wheel, and a pop-up box appears with the name and size of the attachment, in this case 41.71 KB. An aide memoire as to where ilmoro's pig got it's "nest" .

A big thank you to all those who took the time to do something about their attachments this resulted in a 15 MB reduction in our data storage. The number of attachments per post has been reduced to one, but unfortunately it transpires that we cannot reduce our attachment size maximum below 1MB. I have thus today manually deleted a number of attachments; re-posted some picture files as images; and compressed the size of some PDF’s and GIF attachments; I have also left most excel attachments unscathed, but a number are quite large so if the authors can compress in any way please do so. Edit notes are in all the relevant posts. This has been very time-consuming but our attachments are now at the 50% mark of our storage allowance. We’d like to make sure it remains controllable so please help us by thinking twice about making them. If you have an image file please don’t attach it but follow this guide and insert an image instead. For PDF’s consider converting to an image, posting a link, or at worst compressing the file before posting – a useful website for this is here: pdfresizer.com/resize; likewise for gif files gifgifs.com/resizer/
