You could look at Investment trusts specialising in loans which are similar or the same as P2P loans. I have taken an interest as they are generally trading at a discount which more than wipes out the charges. The ones I know of are:- P2P Global Investments, yields about 5% are trading at about 14% discount. Ranger Direct Lending, yields about 12% are trading at about 27% discount. VPC Specialty Lending Investments , yields about 7% are trading at about 7% discount. Ranger Direct Lending is probably the most risky and the low price is due to a large loan defaulting so I guess a lack of confidence. As these also lend outside of the UK there are currency risks. These can all be held in an ISA, if not in an ISA the income is treated as Income so the first £1000 is tax free (£500 if high rate tax payer) and if you are low paid the fist £6000 is tax free. Low pay is not your total income but money paid as Salary and Pension I believe. have looked before but the Ranger direct problems of last year put me off a blt but may be worth another look now. With regards the tax would their dividends not come under the £5000 tax free dividend allowance (£2000 from next April) outside an ISA/Pension? Ranger Direct Lending do seem to have their problems after the Argon Bankruptcy which cause a large lone to default however this is only a small % of the loan book. I can't decide if they are good value now or have more bad news to come, they are the risker side of this type of investment but may well give some good returns. I believe the income from these funds comes as an income distribution not dividends so fall into the same taxation pot as bank, bonds and P2P interest therefore taxed at you income tax rate but can be used for you tax free interest income which is £500 to £6000 depending on salaried and pension income.

Listed private equity funds maybe be worth looking at a part of a broad investment portfolio. I have had holdings in Standard Life Private Equity Trust PLC and HG Capital Trust for a number of years - both are focused on European PE investments. HG have a particularly impressive long term track record - 14.5%pa over the past 20 years (vs FTSE all share of 7.8%pa) and was resilient in 2008-09 and has been a fairly consistent performer over all periods. PE funds have had a re-rating over the past year as their relative cheapness (most had been trading at significant discounts to NAV) has been brought into focus by takeovers. However, I think they are still worth looking at as part of a diverse long term portfolio. When I look at the performance of all my investments over the past 15 years, my investments in listed PE has been among the best in terms of risk/reward with higher than average returns and lower risk (risk being the variation in value/share price year to year).

Personally I would steer well clear of Private Equity. Horrible business staffed by horrible people. Private Equity and Hedge Funds are two parts of the financial sector that would not be missed if they were not invented. Many people within the financial sector would likely agree with that point of view too. As someone who recently joined a hedge fund after 20+ years in US investment bank (most recently was the head of IR derivative trading) what makes you so qualified to generalize that I'm a horrible person? You must be perfect I assume Moreover, as someone who biggest investment is in an ex-colleague's hedge fund, I've been incredibly happy with their performance. Best risk-return proposition in my portfolio.

Nothing inherently bad about private equity, it's no different from investing in public companies except they aren't listed on a stock exchange.

I worked for a company taken over by pe. To be frank, they were s$$$s. Destroyed the co value and hurt people's lives. When the remnant was bought back into plc the new owners could not believe the mess.
Still happy days, as I got to get a handsome payoff and watched these 'experts' makes a complete balls up.

I've bought many of the new issues on the London stock exchange ORB bond market over the last few years. The big advantage is that this way you are buying the bonds at par. I've kept most, but sold a few along the way, there is no capital gains tax to pay on listed bonds so any capital gain is tax free. New issues have slowed down a lot though... What is the CGT position on bonds? Are their any tax benefits?

Equally you can't make use of any losses to offset against cgt if you sell bonds at a loss. Yo do have to pay income tax on any interest payments on bonds
