My last two cars were catalogue cars, that is those used by HQ to photo for the UK side image. Both Renault I found them on HQs website, no haggle and about 20% off list. Local garage didn't want to be involved, so I went to the nearest large dealer that would. The last one had 4 year's service included for that price.
It is worth estimating if you need to own a car, with MOT, insurance, fuel, maintenance etc and logical journeys (regular and irregular) I find a lot of people do better with taxis and the odd car hire. Plus you get another room to the house. One friend now has a sauna and the other a gym and cost savings.
I have to say I find this a little dispiriting. I fully understand the "practical" side of driving and that there may be cheaper options but nobody on here has actually mentioned the sheer "joy" of motoring. I own a Jaguar XKR and often go out for a drive to nowhere in particular just to enjoy something that was my ambition since I had learnt to walk. I also have a Van Diemen single seater and do regular track days. If I actually sat down and worked out the economics of all this my head would probably implode, but God do I enjoy it!

OK, I'll start. I LOVE driving, even though I would from time to time get all driven out when doing road trips for work (290 miles to get to a customer, then come back the following day). So yes, sheer joy. And its why I have a car with 300+ hp engine. But I increasingly can't help but think of CO2 emissions everytime I get in the car, and that legislates against doing any driving for driving's sake.

But I increasingly can't help but think of CO2 emissions everytime I get in the car... Reduce-Reuse-Recycle applies here as much as everywhere else. There are a massive amount of resource and emissions used in car manufacture and logistics - especially if the car is manufactured on the other side of the world. Brand is no guide to production location, either. Yes, we have a lot of vehicles. The newest one is older than the average age of a car at scrapping in this country. Yes, some of them use a LOT of fuel. The 15mpg car would be lucky to do 500 miles a year, and has covered a total of 40k miles in 40 years. Yes, we drive long distances for holidays - in a 40yo 40mpg+ car that contains a lot of recycled parts, instead of flying.

When I was a kid I loved going on a grand tour in a car. But then I understood climate change and now cycle on holiday, getting to countries by boat and train if possible. Having the money is not the point, I too just think of the CO2.
I hope no one is offended by what I'm about to write...
Should you have children and drive a car for fun?

Ah, yes. Crotchfruit. Not only the single greatest act of climate vandalism that two people can inflict, but also the single greatest vanity... ( "Our DNA must continue, for the sake of the future!")

As far as leased cars beware the return at end of contract terms . A small stone chip on any panel say one on front vallance , one on bonnet may be charged at full panel repray cost , and a couple of say dog scratches in boot area £900 charges . It will be their interested to find chargable defects on which they will make a proft and inhance the resale value. My brother experianced this and it was ruthless.

Why not, but more drive a fun car than a car for fun.

Last Volvo had over 500,000 on the clock. I can do 30,000+ per annum Non Covid. I had to shoot it in the end. My replacement cost less than £6,000 and I intend to do the same. How anyone could buy a new car is beyond me. Gold bullion is going down again . Buy into that.

Pretty much all my holidays for many many years have been either cycling or walking holidays. I have no interest in 'driving' holidays, nor being on some form of "tour", unless propelled under own steam. I will however take a plane to get to my destination (dreams on......). With more time on my hands....perhaps that will change. However, I also now possess a motorhome......so that is also I'm afraid going to come into the equation. However, it would be a gentle progression in whatever direction of travel with lots of stops since the main point will be to indulge in the cycling or walking in a variety of places.

That's usually exaggerated by people who haven't bothered to read the very well documented industry-standard BVRLA "fair wear and tear" guide. www.alphabet.com/en-gb/bvrla

If you're handing yourself in, it must be somewhere local; on no account should you drive to do this. I would normally suggest removal of gonads for such heinous behaviour, but clearly this is too late in your case
