had an email from Ebay saying "now protected from false not as described claims"
so I thought great stop some of the scams :- The most recent was I sold a Rare Camera lens ( IE I couldn't find a similar one on eBay at all ) Buyer paid over the odds ( More than I thought it was worth ), Item posted next day, 2 days later get a message saying it's arrived but doesn't work properly and wants a refund.I talked him through some tests to no avail. Then he suddenly says he has another identical lens and that works soit must be mine.
Lens sent back and it's clearly not my lens there are marks that are not on the pictures, I refer it to eBay and the attitude is "you sold this 18-70 lens and the buyer has sent an 18-70 back whats the issue"
any way reading the new protection
Good news, you’re now eligible to receive credit for return postage costs when a buyer falsely says your item is not as described. What you need to know • If you believe the buyer has made a false claim, please accept the return and then report the buyer to us. • If your report is accepted, you will receive an allowance for the return label cost on your next invoice for up to £3.50. • All negative and neutral reviews, defects and open cases as a result of the false ‘not as described’ claim will be automatically removed from your service metrics. • This is a limited protection and is subject to the report being accepted and other factors including seller performance.
so I can get upto £3.50 credit on Postage on a return, no protection at all from scammers who swap items, or return something completely different

I've seen plenty of listings over the years that state that serial numbers are noted of products being sold and/or detailed photos are kept so that if an item is returned it can be matched up with what was originally sold (or not). I don't know whether that sort of evidence is enough for eBay to side with the seller or not, but at least might deter most of the scammers.

Ebay almost always favour the buyer. Presumably its expensive for them to get involved in any detail so they broadly come down on the side of the buyer as legislation is generally also heavily biased in their favour.
Don't know what the solution is.

Never made a claim with Ebay, But I did on Shpock for an Item I didn't receive.
my evidence was basically the sale document, a copy of my bank transfer details, and the chain of emails from the seller saying she'd received the money, item would be posted the next day, Sorry Been ill will post tomorrow, this is tracking number, etc
Applied for hearing in my Local Court, at her request was transferred to her local court.
Was surprised when I got there to find she was defendant in 2 other cases, one of the other claims was for the same items I'd bought.
She didn't turn up, her Mother did and she used the same excuse, she was mentally ill and didn't realise she actually had to send items she sold.
In all 3 cases she was ordered to pay 50p a week, A little after 3 years later she has paid 2/3 of the amount off
Process is pretty painless If you are properly prepared

Spitting feathers !
Answered a series of questions from a potential buyer about a camera lens, the last message was " I see you include the leaflet with the lens, I've found the lens cheaper with another seller and was wondering can you scan the leaflet and send me it please "
My response was "I can photocopy the leaflet and post it for £5"
People getting to damn cheeky

24th December I had a sold notification on an item just after 4PM, had a message 10 minutes later from buyer saying " as it's Christmas It would be a nice gesture if you could deliver this tonight You are only 30 miles or so away" She has had the cheek to message me this morning to say "disappointed that the item hasn't arrived yet"

"Apologies the item isn't with you in line with your expectations, however it does take quite a while to walk the 30 miles to you, as I don't have a vehicle"
I don't understand why people on eBay can't understand that the time to negotiate stuff like that is *BEFORE* they bid/buy and pay. Not after.

You are not responsible for the emotional state of another person on the internet whose relationship seems to be so product focused and has set themselves some seriously out of crock expectations. Either let it go or just advise when you will be sending it.

I had someone ask me to send something abroad (as I remember to Australia) I quoted tracked postage and they were annoyed it could be a lot cheaper without tracking, but for a seller if you send an overseas parcel with no tracking you have absolutely no come back if it apparently doesn't arrive. This one was fine.
