Actually a payment for somethings would not worry me. For me a £5 fee to see my GP I believe this is the case in Portugal. 4 euros to see your gp sameday. Stops folk not turning up no doubt.

Ah , but what about The Poor (who are always with us)? For the poor we need a community system like the NHS where everybody pays in a share and can access some services for free.

Shocked. Rang this morning, Had the usual 2 minute announcement, then instead of you are number 15 in the queue, the phone rang and was answered within 10 seconds ( the norm is at least 40 minutes in queue then the phone rings for about 5 minutes ). A different voice on the other end, explained the issue was told " Doctor will ring you shortly". Doctor rang me inside 30 minutes ! did a medication review over the phone, next review is set for December, Medication is on repeat until then, that's how it should be.

I also spotted that some GPs are prescribing non prescription items for example gaviscon etc Better get it without prescription as a prescription cost 11+£ and a 60 table box of Gaviscon you can get for 30% less on the internet. You don't need a prescription for Gaviscon

But if you get free prescriptions... no-brainer then isn't it Nope because you've still got to go through the rigmarole described above.

Not sure what a rigmarole is
If you need Gaviscon just get it on the internet or change your eating habit (so you don't need it) or get generally more relaxed/cool, which will reduce your acid production.
Worth a try!?!

But if you get free prescriptions... no-brainer then isn't it It depends in your circumstances. If you are poor, I agree. But if the only reason for free prescriptions is because you are over 60 there are two reasons why you might prefer to pay: 1. On principle, so as not to waste govt/NHS funds. Think how much the prescription must cost to process, let alone the cost of the medication. 2. Self interest, perhaps. If you need to have medical screening for travel insurance you are likely to be asked how many medications you have on prescription. The number affects the price, regardless of what they are. For both these reasons I pay for my low dose aspirin myself. I did ask the insurance screener very carefully about this and was assured that anything I bought myself did not have to be disclosed.

OK I'm Over 60, and live in Wales
GP is a 3 mile round trip so 10P in fuel, then 30 minute wait to collect the prescription, against call in to Pharmacy and buy paracetamol for 30p ( or 22p at supermarket )
I think many people think they are entitled to treatment for any condition for free

But doesn't your GP do online prescriptions? Mine has turned off many other online services due to covid, but prescriptions still work. Order from GP online and get text from chemist when ready. BTW I'm not sure if you were equating my low dose aspirin with paracetamol, but it's different. Aspirin for headaches etc is not advised these days. Low dose aspirin (75mg) is taken daily for heart conditions.

That is very interesting. I had not thought of that. Up until not short of a year ago, I had travel insurance through work. No I do not, and I have not felt the need to take out such since then (pandemic and all that). We are hoping to get my father out to Belgium in the near future, and at 89 with various problems he rattles like the proverbial pill box. I had expected age to be a major factor in TI cost, but not specifically the number of prescription drugs. On that note, for travel to EU countries with GHIC card in place, does anyone have (useful) thoughts on the additional benefits of having travel insurance on top or potentially going without ? .

Probably close to 50p for your 3 mile trip at 50mpg these days
