Germany really won't want to head back to the 1970s. Although their bricklayers might be quite fancying it.

So, unlike Germany, losing our shipbuilding, coal mining, railway engineering and motor industry is finally paying off? Baffles me...
Don't tell Boris, or he'll claim it was his government policy all along to not emulate Germany.

Here's me posting a serious question about currency risk and a balance of payments crisis, and all I get are theae frivolous replies about Auf Wiedersehen Pet!
If you can't take this seriously, I will have to take my perspicatious warnings to a more serious forum. I happen to be a member of the John Berkow Fan Club Facebook Group. Then you will all be sorry.

Well, no, it was more a frivolous reply about putting the Berlin Wall back up - because, obvs, Geordies can't just travel to work in Germany any more.

I remember the 70's, queuing for fuel (and actually going round twice because I was commuting a long way and you could only put in a certain amount). Power cuts, I still have a few oil lamps from the time, I hope it's not so bad this time around1

The last time was just a few weeks ago I think.

The last time was just a few weeks ago I think. I haven't had a 'proper' power cut for years, local power down for a few minutes may be once in the last 12 months. During the strikes in the 70s the power was out half a day at a time routinely, no lights, no cooker, not even a kettle, we did have a gas fire and an open fire so we didn't freeze. Fuel has been a bit short recently usually only for a day or so and usually the next garage down the road has some. Back in the day you could queue for hours, pushing the car forward as the queue moved, to preserve any fuel you had left, and hoping they wouldn't run out by the time you got to the front. There's a way to go to get that bad and I hope it won't!

yes lets go back,
Decent music in the most part people went to the pub and talked not sat watching phone screen Football was 3pm on a Saturday
Beer and Chocolate were both better
Bacon was tasty, eggs didnt cover half a frying pan
The family watched TV together, and ate together, one meal was prepared and everyone ate it
and if you met a young lady no worries about herpes, AIDS or chlamydia
Ladies didn't put make up on with a trowel, and most British girls were quite pale most of the time, not perma tanned

We've had a lot of planned electricity interruptions round here in ruralshire lately, as Western Power have been replacing high voltage cables, poles, transformers. We've had a few unplanned outages during winter storms, but rarely for long.

Weirdly its something that sticks in my mind, in the early 80s when my grandfather died several boxes of candles were brought home from the house, along with all the tinned and dry foodstuffs.
But even now I have candles about and know exactly where the matches are to light them.
Was strange tolook out the other week and see that the street was in darkness as the power had gone off, cos I have solar and battery I didn't notice
