Why ? They'll be plenty of BJ supporters who couldn't consider Rishi. Even more so if it went to the members of the party at large. Michael Fabricant is leading the never-Sunak camp urging people to switch to Mordaunt, but in the name of "unity" in the party I suspect most will do like Zahawi and support Sunak. I think so too but I don't think its 20 or 30 times more likely.... Edit: And I suspect in many folks case its not about unity but more about how high up the pole their greasy hands can land.

Personally, I'd like a Swiss system with important decisions decided by the public. I'd also like to see voting made compulsory. As indeed it is Down Under ........

Never before has a campaign been so likely to misfire solely as a consequence of who is its original proponent.

Sure, but it seems clear to me there are people at work trying to unite the party around Sunak and end the contest sooner rather than later. Like, Jeremy Hunt - despite both Mordaunt and Sunak already saying they would keep him as Chancellor - just published this article in The Telegraph: Why I’m backing Rishi Sunak for prime minister

BJ claims to have 102 supporters, but the BBC can only count as far as 57.
So where will all the BJ supporters go, and will people be leaning on Mordaunt to pull out and give Rishi a clear run to the line?
Betfair has Penny at 29/1. Surely thats a good bet (he says after loosing too much on BJ) Edit: OK couldn't resist. 22/1 by the time I got my cash there. got on Rishi at 3.6 with Betfair early on, he was better odds to be next Conservative leader than next PM you have to look for these value bets...

From the BBC. I bet he's not feeling quite so Cleverly now...
"Another Boris Johnson backer has switched to endorse Rishi Sunak for Tory Party leader - this time Foreign Secretary James Cleverly. Cleverly announced his support for Johnson yesterday just hours before Johnson pulled out of the race."

I don't think that holds up. The BBC throughout were clear that their count was "those that have PUBLICLY supported the candidates". And at certain times when I looked, they also had a link to the full list of names that they were attributing. They also made it clear that support would be higher than those numbers due to those who had not publicly declared.

With the BBC reporting that more than half the Parlimentary Party has publicly announced their support Sunak, one wonders why Mordant is still hanging on. If she gets 100 backers by 2pm her only way of becoming PM will be for the wider membership to go against the wishes of the Parlimentry Party meaning we get another lame duck PM and will potentially be back here again in a few weeks time

Perhaps she's cementing her leadership contender status for the next round of chaos. Or maybe she brokered some kind of bed-blocking strategy with Rishi in exchange for a key ministerial position...so, taking a chunk of MP support votes out of the available pool (which would otherwise be carved up between RS and BJ) and also, assuming that works (has obviously happened whether by design or luck), give membership the illusion of choice. At this point I think they will vote for safe pair of financially competent hands (RS) given the risks exposed to pension funds over last weeks. It will be interesting to see if/what post RS gives PM. Edit: also conscious of my 0% political betting win rate here. Even betting on RS since before the dawn of "furlough", I'll STILL not win anything even if he gets it now due to the Liz Truss blip!

Penny Mordaunt drops out of Tory leadership race and backs Sunak Apparently she had 99.99 MPs backing her. Just two minutes more and she'd done it.

I believe she was aware that the game was up a while ago, but was haggling with Rishi to try to get one of the top jobs. Be interesting to see what she is offered (assuming it's not the door).
Overall a victory for common sense.

Is that two coronations in a month? Let's hope he doesn't have the Truss "death grip" or we may have to have another bloody one.
