Forgive me whilst I rant !
I know my Sim only deal is out of contract
So I try to upgrade online and it wants to send a new sim card,
So I give up and dial Customer services it offers me options at a price 50% higher with no option to speak to a human So I give upon that and decide that I will use the online help
Chatbot 1 asks for some details and then says it will transfer me to a member of the team to chat via WhatsAPP Lo and behold I get connected to chatbot 2 who asks the same questions then decides I need to speak to a human via Whatsapp
So I'm connected to a human who asks the same questions. Then sends a link to authenticate my memorable word and gives me the hint to it.
As the link is to a completely different website ( IE not the website of the company I'm calling ) I point blank refuse to use it.
I then get given a different number to ring
Eventually I get through
I explain the issues and get a pretty much fob off answer ( I've asked for a callback from a manager )
I get annoyed when they want to transfer me and the next person I speak to has the same name and accent !
I get offered the deal but they need to do a credit check !
What nonsense I've been a customer for 5 years and paid every month !
the one bit of good news is I've managed to get the deal I wanted but it really shouldn't take over an hour

1hr... that was quick. Wasnt vodaphone by any chance? I had the same issues, eventually got a human, got the deal thankfully for 2 years. Its annoying and unnecessary.

Last time I had a chat with Vodafone, it was a woman working in the call centre located in Egypt.
She asked me if I wanted to visit the country, not the sort of conversation expected when I made a complaint about their slow roll out of 5G.
Outcome, switched to a different network for real 5G services.
Still no 5g from Vodaone at the place I wanted at present time

Not sure I've had it take that long to get a new deal on the phone, but then I'm not on Vodafone.
I did just get an email from my mobile provider saying that I'm coming up to the end of my contract and offering me some deals.
For 40p less than my current offer I could have half the data on a new 24m contract, at the end of that contract I might just have saved enough to buy a celebratory pint (based on current inflation)
Or there's a more expensive option with more data (which if I ever got close to the current cap might be worth the added cost)

Three? I'm on PAYG with 'em, and they've ramped it.
I put about thirty quid a year on, because I use it so rarely, because round here there's ZERO SIGNAL... Looking like putting a tenner a month on a package will become "cheaper".
(I'm with them primarily because they're the only ones that do SMS/calls over Wifi on PAYG. No signal means it's a right PITA doing 2FA.)

They use the Three network. Their £5 a month plan gets me 4GB data and unlimited calls and texts. No contract (it's a month at a time), flexibility to upgrade to a costlier deal one month to obtain increased data (if you plan to be tethering on holiday for example), then revert back to the £5 a month level the following month. I've been with them a couple of years now and very happy. I know I can make calls over Wifi. Fairly sure my SMS has worked that way too, when out of signal, but not certain. You'd need to check you can send/receive your SMS/calls that way, but it would only cost you £5 to find out. In the unlikely event it doesn't, you've only signed up for a month.

I can’t really complain about virtual sim. It works as long as the app connected to the net. Some virtual sim providers provide better services, doesn’t cost much and doesn’t block text for 2fa purpose

I've found Tesco mobile to be pretty resaonable over the last few years. I think they currently promise (and have for a while) that they won't increase your contract price if you remain on the same contract. keitha I'm not sure whether you said you were on monthly SIM only or PAYG though. I do have a monthly because I get enough use out of it. Including data.

Edit: or at least not one that uses the mobile network.

I have no signal here but my smart meter works fine through wifi
I use 3 PAYG as the signal is so bad, but if I go into a tiny space upstairs I can get messages. I only put £20 in a year.
My alarm works fine again becuase the aerial is in that small space When wifi goes off copper guess where that aerial will go
Some years ago wee went through a lot of telecoms companies, deleting any that had bad customer service. It is tough and it is a geographical solution. Right now we use Vodaphone just because, touch wood, no problems so no need for customer service contact.

When wifi goes off copper
<pet peeve> WiFi... WIRELESS... WiFi isn't your broadband. WiFi is what you do with your broadband once it's in your house. You mean "when broadband goes off copper". Well, a lot of broadband already is off copper. Ours is FTTP - Fibre To The Premises. But our landline is still copper... ...and that's the thing that's "going off copper" over the next few years. OFCOM target of 2025 to decommission the copper network. Which is lovely, until places with no mobile signal at all have a nine day fibre outage. Oh, yes. Our village, a couple of months ago. All the people whose landlines have been migrated already to digital had no way of speaking to anybody by phone for a week and a bit.

Not sure your early comment really helps, I understand what I am saying and you understood what I was saying so comms worked.
No fibre here, so copper is all I have. I can see fibre, it is about 20 metres from my house, but for reasons that are beyond me I am not allowed it.
I could rant, or just live a life.
