Thought this should have it's own thread.
England game about to start. Brazillian ref has handed out 10 red cards in last 9 games.
One of the benefits of being retired is that you can adopt the high moral ground with anyone who bunks off work to watch the footie.

I'd like the moral highground of boycotting this fossil fueled money fest , but actually I can't bother to watch

I'm quite enjoying this clash of cultures.
Of course we're right in everything we do and they should behave like us. Not.

FIFA once again proving to be a spineless bunch of money grabbers
and as to the actual game it is obvious that Goalie couldn't continue, the ref should have instructed them to take him off,

It was a head-butt that Johnny Kwango would have been proud of

It’s must be special for those Iranian women supporting their team, they can enjoy football match and dress whatever they want without fearing Morality Police.

brave Iranian team didn't sing but have to go back to that hell hole
English team didn't even manage to put a piece of cloth on their arms but have to go back to being millionaires
Looks like European footballers seem to have caved across the board to stand up for a minority, that is a cultural failing

Do you know what the laws are in Qatar regarding women and dress? I don't either but suspect its not as simple as you imply. And, you probably believe our system is much better in that regard? Women are free to wear whatever they like or next to nothing. Other countries are different and we don't have any right to challenge them. Nor even to think we are somehow morally superior - I'm sure many of those other countries think likewise.

So we don't have any right to challenge Russia in relation to their attempts to take over Ukraine. We should just sit back and let them get on with it?

You wouldn't accept behaviour that uses force to annex another country.....No doubt the UN have a bunch of rules that encapsulate that. I'm talking about laws such as not presenting homosexuality as normal to young children. Or banning it altogether. Or laws that assign gender at birth and don't allow it to be changed. We as a country who believe something different, have no right to demand they change "their ways".

I remember years ago going to meteora in Greece, It was made very clear when booking that the Monasteries have very strict dress codes.
Get on the Bus and there are a lot of women and Blokes unsuitably dressed.
we arrive and debus and there's one Woman in a Bikini ! ( it about covered everything ) and several men topless. the guide again explains the dress code and they mutter about how terrible it is that they are expected to comply with Greek rules (we are British !).
they try to get in and are given attire to put over the top, Ms Bikini promptly rearranges it to reveal as much as possible. We get into the monastry and she then takes the top off. You can almost hear the tuts from the monks. we get outside at the end of the tour and a Police car has turned up and she gets arrested for "outraging decency"
you have to abide by your hosts culture and customs

Don't like Qatari attitudes to homosexuality or alcohol or women? Don't go to Qatar. Do NOT go, then moan. That's different from governmental pressure to abide by modern-day civilised standards, of course. But putting pressure on by consumer power? That we can do. Vote with our wallets. The football will still be on the telly, if you're bothered enough to even be contemplating going.
