I remember years ago going to meteora in Greece, It was made very clear when booking that the Monasteries have very strict dress codes. Get on the Bus and there are a lot of women and Blokes unsuitably dressed. we arrive and debus and there's one Woman in a Bikini ! ( it about covered everything ) and several men topless. the guide again explains the dress code and they mutter about how terrible it is that they are expected to comply with Greek rules (we are British !). they try to get in and are given attire to put over the top, Ms Bikini promptly rearranges it to reveal as much as possible. We get into the monastry and she then takes the top off. You can almost hear the tuts from the monks. we get outside at the end of the tour and a Police car has turned up and she gets arrested for "outraging decency" you have to abide by your hosts culture and customs "you have to abide by your hosts culture and customs"Shame then isn't it that many arrive here (UK) and not only ignore that, but want to instigate their culture and customs here?

Except they don't, really, not outside the fevered imagination of the Waily Dail. Depends where you are in the UK. Then, many do,really. Especially problematic in areas of education . To veil or not to veil . To participate in sport. To mix freely with the opposite sex. To move freely beyond the home environment and all those other freedoms that are part of UK culture .

Which cultural norms should we put up with, child brides, child prostitution, slavery, debt inheritance, prejudice based on religion, cast, tribe or colour, ownership rights being different due to gender, race, colour or religion, physical modification enforced due to religion, race, skin colour, rights and laws to divorce being different due to gender.
It is all very childlike to sit and watch Olympian like comparing cultures, but getting into a culture and suddenly discovering that your rights have just been removed, or never existed because you skin is the wrong colour or your religion is not acceptable or even that your right to life just got removed because you like kissing people of the same gender. Not understanding this suggests a lack of empathy.
I have friends who are not allowed to go to some parts of their own home town because of their job, or their religion or their skin colour not their nationality or wealth. This is not a game this is prejudice and needs to be fought everyday. Yes there are some absolutes.

I thought I got it here "physical modification enforced due to religion"
Really...?
Who's stopping them, and how?
Institutions are stopping them and by violence, that can be mafia like organisations, political organisations, religious organisations.

"you have to abide by your hosts culture and customs"Shame then isn't it that many arrive here (UK) and not only ignore that, but want to instigate their culture and customs here? As a young man I spent many years working in the middle east. Forum rules prohibit me from saying what I realy think, suffice to say they are the most hypocritical group of people you could wish to meet.
- A Scottish teacher got into trouble in Sudan by naming the class pet Mohamad. When they asked people in the UK what they thought they all said she should comply with the laws of the country she was in. However, those same people expect special treatment regarding UK rules when it suits them
- When working in Cairo I would often see local men trying to chat up western women. If I was to try to chat up their sister they would chase me off with a knife.
- Jemima Goldsmith was the daughter of a very wealthy british businessman. No issues with her converting to Islam and marrying Imran Khan. However, if Imrans sister wanted to convert to Christianity to marry an Englishman she would be lucky to get out the country alive.
- A man went to court claiming the loss of his driving licence would cause exceptional hardship. The reason he gave was that his religion allowed him to have 2 wives, who lived 50 miles apart. He needed the car to travel between houses.

I'm waiting with a deep sense of dread as to what will become of those brave, principled Iranian footballers who refused to join in with the national anthem. Forget rainbow armbands, that was a REAL gesture. Total admiration.

Forget rainbow armbands, that was a REAL gesture. Total admiration. Media reporting there are lots of Iranian people in Tehran waving Union Jacks and celebrating the English victory. Defeat is seen as a slap in the face for hated regime
