Alisdair Cameron, giving evidence today, comes across as very credible. He paints a pretty poor picture of the entire corporation.

Yes, I think one of the primary motives for this war was the Putin regime's fear of having a successful, free, Western leaning democracy holding up a mirror to Russia.

Pick your historical starting point to suit your preferred endpoint.
I do not have a preferred endpoint I am merely pointing out how Russian Nationalists - such as Putin - see things from my understanding of their perspective. My only interest in this situation is to see this war end ASAP since it is very obvious to me the only thing that is going to happen is a large number of Ukrainians are going to be killed in a war they cannot win AND more importantly I do not want to die in a nuclear war. Ukraine and Russias dispute over territory is nothing to do with me and I dont believe in getting involved in things that are not my concern outside of humanitarian and self preservation interests. As you are already aware I am of the view that western meddling in this situation has made it ALOT worse for Ukraine.
What about what Ukraine wants? Does that count with you?

Seems like a lot of self-determination going on there. Oh, wait a minute...

I am not a massive fan of Donald Trump, but I respect his personal courage* and believe he is more in tune with reality than some of the people currently running the US. That would be Donald "Bonespurs" Trump would it?

I've quite enjoyed watching proceedings for yesterday and today (for reference 08 and 09 May 2024). Barristers going at barristers makes for a high class game.

Well no more or less than most other nations more or less. The problem with the middle aged and elderly as are extremely well represented here, is they were brought up on a diet of US=force for good. One thing that gets their back up is to be reminded that the US is the only country in history to drop a nuclear bomb on cities massacring hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians. The US did that. Nobody else. You'd think they'd be a little contrite but no, they have to decide to constantly keep invading other countries. It was for the greater good they'll cry. Try telling that to the families and descents of hundreds of the thousands of people. We won't change any opinions and vice-versa but its always interesting to debate. I totally agree, a lot of the views held by people regarding escalation with Russia on this thread can only be explained by dementia or not having much time left anyhow. oh gawd, now you're a neurologist and a palliative care consultant? In addition to your without compare military expertise, and geopolitical insight. OK.

Obviously Kissinger did not issue a public warning to the world about being an ally of the US - it highlights the fact that although the US goes about the world acting as if they are on a moral crusade they act out of self interest and have very little morality. It is a lot like the "Magic Bullet" theory - it is widely used to highlight the ridiculous lies the psychopaths in the US government tell to cover their nefarious actions. I guess in the modern era it is called a Meme. Well no more or less than most other nations more or less. I wasn't aware that that point needed highlighting. Kissinger would be laughing at you.

angrysaveruk you're dangerously (deliberately?) misquoting / misunderstanding. “Nixon should be told that it is probably an objective of Clifford to depose Thieu before Nixon is inaugurated. Word should be gotten to Nixon that if Thieu meets the same fate as Diem, the word will go out to the nations of the world that it may be dangerous to be America’s enemy, but to be America’s friend is fatal.”

NATO has pushed to the edges of Russian territories since 1989 - when NATO should have been disbanded just like the Warsaw Pact did. When you're in a hole... (Is it true what Patton is alleged to have said about getting the other dumb barstool to do all the fighting/dying? How apt a description of our times and NATO's alleged role in fighting Russia from behind a curtain.) Interesting use of language. One that tries to imply something rather different to the reality. NATO didn't PUSH to the edges of Russian territories. Rather sovereign and democratic countries requested to JOIN NATO. IIRC there was a common factor amongst many, in fact nearly all, those sovereign independent and democratic countries which might have been a factor, but I'm struggling to remember what it is. Oh I remember, silly me. They had spent somewhere near the last 45 or 50 years living under the yoke of communism with in the main Moscow puppet regimes subjugating their populations. The lesson of Czechoslovakia 1968 was no less lost on the likes of Estonia, Latvia, etc. than it was the Czech's. Perhaps they felt their hard won reinstated independence and nascent democractic status would be safer under the umbrella of NATO. Looking at Ukraine and Georgia, and even Belarus, you'd be forgiven for thinking they might have had a point, Oh I don't think the Baltic states were under any illusions, what with bitter memories of being annexed in 1940.
