Interesting piece on yesterday's BBC2 Newsnight's, with Emma Bartlett asking an XR representative to state where the science was to back up Roger Hallam's claim that climate change would cause six billion human deaths by 2100 or his claim that your kids would be dead within 10-15 years. Unsurprisingly XR rep couldn't back up either claim. BBC iPlayer, it's after the Brexit stuff.
Whilst Saint Greta correctly says "don't listen to me, listen to the scientists", I guess Hallam goes with "don't listen to the scientists, listen to me".
Today, Guardian reporting XR blockading BBC headquarters. Revenge for last night, or XR don't accept impartial truth only their version of truth?

Extinction rebellion is not about climate, it is an anti capitalist movement seeking to use widespread disruption to trigger revolution. This is clear from the writings and videos of Stuart Basden, Roger Hallam et al and they have raised a small army of useful idiots but need many more to achieve their objective of breaking Western European capitalism that is the cause of all the world's ills.
Most people would be more comfortable with evolution rather than an uprising, however, it is clear that in general people cannot simply be persuaded to make fundamental changes to their behaviour, government must use taxes, subsidies, and regulation to influence decision making and in this respect I think that we should do more.

I've just found this (video), Mallen Baker looking at "Last week, BBC’s Hard Talk programme featured Extinction Rebellion founder Roger Hallam. During the interview he said that the science predicts mass starvation leading to the inevitable collapse of capitalism within the next ten years. He added that we would likely see the death of 6 billion people within fifty to seventy years. Was he right? We look at the science."

More or Less covered that a month ago. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000846nNormal world death rate is about 8.3/1000 current population about 7.5 billion That gives 62 million deaths per year at current rates. just for argument let's keep the rate about the same. So deaths by natural causes will be 5 Billion by the end of the century, population is predicted to be about 11 billion.
So wth the additional 6 Billion that will leave Nobody except perhaps little Extintion Rebellion survivors "Starlight and Keanu " to repopulate (and get brexit done) in the now flourishing world as all CO2 sources will have gone and mother nature takes back the planet.
I think the next 3 generations should make that sacrifice so the next million years will be a utipia for the next 34000 generations of cave dwelling humans who's life expextancy will of course drop to about 30 as previous hominid did. That of course assumes no super volcano eruptions or asteroid hits.
This will all be over by the end of the month as remainers predict the end of the world if we get a no deal Brexit

The government should also state that Heathrow runway 3 won't be approved (on grounds of emissions, noise, disruption). The current PM is on record as having stated that he would lie "in front of those bulldozers and stop the building, stop the construction of that third runway" And who are we to doubt his word? Would there also be any ditches in the vicinity by any chance? :-) Brian

The Impax IEM, charges are a bit eyewatering got to do well on the capital gains on that one
(charges are more than the divi!) The Montanaro and Baillie Gifford look interesting, costs a bit more reasonable companies invested in (generally) seem diverse enough, geographically and by sector. I'll have to work out some allocations. incidently, presumably charges didn't put you off Impax? any particular reason?
Thx Brian

There is a lot of hateful nonsense written about Margaret mainly by socialist women haters and it is true she did not understand the "Pole" tax situation at all but the worst insult is to say she destroyed the mining industry. The BBC commissioned an economist to investigate and the decline of the British Coal started soon after WW2 and continued more or less in a straight line, the effect of MT is not visible in that decline.
Now the economist was the daughter of a coal miner and she had been brought up to believe that MT had destroyed the industry but after the work she went and had a very tough conversation with her father. All this was on the radio.
For me, this is further evidence that we all, believe what we want to believe but it is possible to break free by research and conversation to believe a different thing.
At the time, in the UK the country was in terminal decline and MT, with the help of some very brave people (including Vulcan bomber pilots soaked in Avgas helped turn it around).

The public has those sequences about right based on country by country pollution levels, what they fail to understand that as they play with their "my little pony" that CO2 that was generated in China was created at the behest of the British consumer.
They also forget that one of the things that European countries do is act as the lead influencer on a bunch of things that then give us the chance to make money out of being those influencers. For example, while China makes most of the world's solar panels, nearly all the machinery they buy to make those panels are made in the UK and Germany.

While it's true to say that the coal industry was (rightfully) in decline, it's not true to say that the 80s isn't visible. It's certainly true that the early-mid 80s saw a massive turn-around in the economy and especially in the way the unions had affected the country in the 70s... ...but I think you might be over-egging the Falklands there, more than slightly. It was a localised scuffle over some godforsaken lumps of rock. No more, no less. Well, not quite. The real reason continues to rumble on in the background. www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-32354222

After Suez, the 3 day week, the oil crisis. I remember having to do my homework by candlelight. Rejected as members of Europe. Then we ended up with 26% inflation, even the Icelanders defeated us over cod. The place was a disaster.
While the islands are just rock, the political ramifications of that war were massive. I'm not saying it was right or wrong, but it had a significant effect.
BTW thanks for the graph, you have to look very very closely to see the MT effect on that graph once you account for "noise".
