@foosgold decided I need to put £2880 into my SIPP and get it invested. Fair bit dividends doing nothing. AND like you I am looking at UK. Smaller companies either Henderson or Blackrock. Blackrock clearly has a better 5 year growth 160% against against 100%. But reading Blackrock site they think their holdings have rallied earlier than the rest of the small cap (greater growth prospects). And they are in for lower share price gain in the near future. So first thoughts are Henderson. But damn it Blackrock are showing some bottle too many investment trusts have failed to increase their gearing in this period of bargains. Blackrock 25% gearing very tasty and showing great belief in the prospects for UK growth. Decisions decisions!!

Henderson seems marginally more risky than Blackrock yet is rated and Blackrock is better rated on Trustnet . Henderson has outperformed by 15 percent over 18 months.
Henderson has had the same manager for 20 years Blackrocks manager has been in post since 2018
Henderson has ouperformed by 10 percent over 3 years
Its a difficult one to call but I would probably opt for Henderson but you may consider splitting equally betwen the 2 in your SIPP..
Not advice just my opnion but either the 2 seem good options

foolsgoldOn the other hand I could get the company correct! BlackRock Throgmorton not BlackRock smaller companies. Almost bought the latter by mistake. Put a limit order in based on the high and low for the day. Nice low spread on Throgmorton.

I invested mainly for income in Investment Trusts in the past and in 1995 bought both Temple Bar and Murray International which I still hold.
Temple Bar has gained 229.42% and the dividend is now 10.9% of the original investment.
Murray Int has gained 219.68% and the dividend is now 13.9% of the original investment.
Inflation since 1995 is about 97% so I have been pleased with the result so far even though Temple Bar went through a very rough patch last year..

Good move, I am hoping for the same. Murray seems to have had a good return in the past and overall. Do you remember what the proportion of their investments were in North America? Back when you first invested? That's what seems to be holding them back for the last 10 years.

sd2 I don't remember the allocation between different areas back then, but it went through a very bad patch from about 2013 to 2015 dropping from over £12 to less than £8, but then recovered well over the next 2 years. I also have a lesser amount in Murray Income but it has only gained 134.6% over the same period with current income 9.06%.

Yeah not sure about Murray income Bought perpetual income and growth on the assumption in March that the manager would get the sack. With a good chance of a merger with....Edinburgh investment Trust. Bit of surprise when it was Murray income. Got 10 months dividend reserve on merger which I think leaves Murray income short on reserves. Not sure I will keep it fancy selling and buying North American Income Trust.

Went for Blackrock smaller companies not Throgmortan. Blackrock bit of discount and narrowing reasonable charges. Downside big spread which varies significantly through the day. Very significantly. If you are buying or selling and setting your own price it shouldn't be a massive worry. The highs and lows each day are very big. I have been watching for weeks. Its consistent. Not sure thats a disadvantage. Set a limit order Tuesday 2% below fridays price straight to profit.....0.2%.

Now in profit of 2% on Blackrock smaller. Covid has been good to me, no two ways about it. Nearly everything I bought in December 2020 and January 2021 is up. Used a £30,000 equity release to buy 6 investment trusts. One down 6%, one up 8%, 4 up at least 10%. Very very good to me. I will have to go on holidays when I retire in 21 months time. Any ideas?! Have to take dog with me.
