Having had my second jab on 5th January I was worrying that it would be ineffective, so was happy to get the text offering a booster 3 weeks ago which I was able to book 3 miles away at a new Pharmacy 2U center the next day. All highly efficient, my GP offered it about 2 weeks after that, so the notification systems really do work. I volunteer at the local vaccination 'hub'. Based on what's happening there in terms of people coming for boosters, I can say with confidence that yes the notification systems really do work. Centres are now running joint 'flu and covid' jab appointments (funny how many months ago the advice was to not have covid jab within 7 days of flu but he hoh), which is obviously good. It is a bit depressing when you get clearly old/vulnerable people who say they are there only for flu because as 'they are not going to have the covid jab'. On the flip side, when it was first opened up for the 16-18 year age group, it was pretty inspiring to see the rush of youngsters keen to get vaccinated: more so than when the lowering to 18+ happened. Not sure why that was.Parents ? P.S. If I turned up to Bracknell with a big "P2PIndy Forum Rocks" t-shirt what are my chances of getting a booster? I'm in the 50 plus but had my second jab 25 May. Big problem I have is I need to go away for a few months to be with family abroad and zero chance of a booster where I'm going.

Does anyone know if Booster jab is Pfizer only at the moment, any way to pick a Moderna booster after 2 doses of Pfizer?

There was something about bringing the booster down to five months instead of six, whether that will happen or soon enough for you I don't know.

A bit vague without clarifying which part of 2020 you are comparing the current situation to.
If you are talking about this time last year (when things were about to take off), cases are higher now but hospital admissions, hospitalisation, and ICU cases are not.

My information says you may be offered the Pfizer or the Moderna, I had the AZ before, but I don't think that is being offered as a booster. I don't know if you get a choice or it's whichever they have at the time.

There have been reports that the Moderna protection stays higher longer for the initial vaccinations, but not a lot in it, and would that apply to boosters if true? I might say Moderna if I got a choice but I'm happy with either.

I would say if you are going abroad, it might be worth phoning up the relevant NHS number to explain [EDIT: or your GP if you 'think you're lucky' and can get to speak to one]. But certainly at our local centre, based on current guidelines, you wouldn't be offered or allowed, (working assumption is that the 180 day rule is also a bit about jab safety not just phased rollout or 3rd dose efficacy, and so I doubt the medical practitioners would waive it until the guidance changes). Appointments vs. walkins: this I'm sure will vary from centre to centre. At our local one, the policy is by appointment only UNLESS it is first dose in which case you will be given VIP treatment so you don't walk away And in practise, (assuming the number of appointments vs vaccine available on the day allows,) we will also always do walkins for 'late' second doses (surprising number of people turnup not having had their second dose, when their due date was a number of months ago: ridiculous as it clearly risks reducing the efficacy of the second dose). Also if couples turn up with only one having appointment but the other is eligible then these will always be given and other combinations of 'accompanying person' likewise.

Yes and those moaning about having a third dose of Pfizer were sitting pretty when some of us like me had the inferior vaccine. Pfizer here we come....

I could say in Wales they won't bring back local lockdowns as we had last year. Mostly because last year the Lockdowns only affected the plebs "up the valleys" ie the deprived areas
this year the rate in Cardiff Newport and the Vale is 4 times what we had when we were locked down yet no sign, perhaps becaiuse all our "beloved" leaders live in the affluent areas
A rather cynical view? I'm in the Vale (of Glamorgan) and we had lockdowns too, which affected us just as badly. I may be wrong but, when the Valleys were locked down, wasn't their rate one of the worst in the UK for a protracted period... and, crucially, at a time before most people were vaccinated? You've posted here before how your neighbours were constantly living in each other's houses, ignoring the rules. Perhaps the authorities are also aware of this deep need for social interaction... they know their audience, so react accordingly when setting the thresholds? The Peak Rate here in BG was 246 cases per 100,000 the current rate in Wales is 529 so twice as high. Parts of Cardiff are above 1,100 The Highest in BG is 469 sonaturally the locals feel aggrieved that it seems different rules are being applied deending on which areas are affected.

This resource shows Vale of Glamorgan having 125 cases per 100,000 yesterday; Cardiff 119; Newport 115 and Blaenau Gwent 170 (and the highest of the Valleys, too). That would argue for BG being the first candidate for lockdown!

The map of Wales in that link you've provided still shows the highest case rates in Wales lie in the Valleys.
