I noticed that the coronavirus is called the Wuhan Flu here however my sister tells me her kids call it the boomer remover at school (kids can be cruel). I wonder has anyone heard any other names for it and will they last. I don't think it's going to be up there with Spanish flu, Black death or sweating sickness but who knows. I saw that term on twitter and tbh it disgusts me. I don't even consider myself a terribly kind person, but as a child I would certainly never have found fun in the fears of the elderly (whether medically merited or not). I'm in my 40's by the way - not taking it personally, just raised to have a bit of respect and empathy for others. It's all getting a bit too Lord of the Flies for my liking..,

"Northern Ireland schools will be closed for “at least 16 weeks” but they will they will not be shutting immediately, the region’s first minister, Arlene Foster, has said [...] The disclosure gives a glimpse of the scale of coronavirus crisis to come and will lead to questions as to whether a four-month schools closure is being planned for the rest of the UK."
(my bold)
I've been out and about today in London and whilst there are many fewer tourists around and restaurants catering for them looked very quiet (e.g. along Shad Thames), restaurants targeting locals are as packed as always. Most people are acting sensibly and avoiding touching the escalator hand rails at tube stations etc , but one group of "chuggers" (heavy handed charity signup) was agressively in everyone's personal space.

temperature checks for people in contact with Trump Everyone who comes into contact with President Donald Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence will have their temperature checked, the White House spokesperson Judd Deere says.
“Out of an abundance of caution, temperature checks are now being performed on any individuals who are in close contact with the President and Vice President,” he said.
I assume that is after they have been in contact, not before ?

I assume that is after they have been in contact, not before ? No need for Melania to get checked out then!
I also see there were 1000 new cases in Madrid yesterday. I wonder how many of those people were in Liverpool earlier in the week to watch the football.

Great news, it's not all doom and gloom. Stop looking at Italy, check out Norway. www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/Death rate is under 0.1% in Norway, so far 1 death out of 1035 cases. I think these rates are now meaningless - testing policy is so varied by country/district & loads more have it than have tested positive, the virus is everywhere. What matters is hospital admissions/ITU admissions/deaths. What really matters even above that is avoidable deaths and premature years lost - many of those elderly/already sick who died were going to die soon anyway, often very soon - i.e. if it wasn't Corona virus, it would have been the next thing to come along. Note that in the over 85s, you would expect around 17% to die in any given year, and in the over 75s 7% www.bandolier.org.uk/booth/Risk/dyingage.html. Compare that to Corona virus mortality by age group: 14.8% in the over 80s and 8% in the 70-79s. www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/As always we aren't good at acknowledging or talking rationally about death and illness. Of course it's emotional, it's our loved ones (and/or relatives!), it's our own fears of mortality, etc. I'll probably get called psychopathic again, but I'm pointing out the reality, And I can't help but wonder if all the measures taken will end up doing more harm than good in the long term. Quarantine isn't harmless. After a median duration of quarantine of 10 days for SARS, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression were observed in 28.9% and 31.2% of respondents, respectively. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3323345/And that's before one factors in the myriad of health and social costs that will occur as a result of the severe recession that the attempted counter measures will inevitably cause and/or exacerbate. Even if dramatic draconian measures could stop it now, the 1918 flu pandemic tells us it will be back again with a vengeance in the Autumn... In fact, if I am likely to get it at some point (I think it's likely most of us will), I would like to have it now rather than later so that, if I am one of the unfortunate few that get the bad reaction, there is a functioning ITU for me. I will absolutely follow government advice to try and slow down the spread, I trust that the CSO and CMO are good people trying their best to make difficult judgements, and I will try and protect my elderly or sick loved ones. But I fear we are gradually losing the plot and a sense of perspective, to all of our detriment.

Total overreaction.People know when its time to die. We have far too many old people suffering from age related illness. NHS is merciless when it comes to extending life and not helping alleviate end of life suffering. Here's hoping that this time they will come to terms with merciful release and stop p#ssing around. Both my parents suffered for WEEKS while professionals sat on their hands. You wouldnt put a dog through it. Professionals have to help by law. You could have used a pillow. Pillows are not merciful...interestingly lots of medics will help, but you have to get right ones. My Mother in Law vanished in seconds when we asked the right man not to let her suffer.(She is the only person I have ever known to have an ideal end. I'm appalled at the process people with strong hearts have to suffer. Do NOT go to hospital.

BBC reporting "US travel ban from UK and Ireland confirmed. The ban on travel to the US from UK and Ireland will begin at 00:00 Eastern time on Tuesday (04:00 GMT), US Vice-President Mike Pence has confirmed"
To be expected given the jump in the number of (all time) cases here.

On the theme of baby boomers, there are going to be an awful lot of couples in the world about to spend the most time they have ever spent together in their lives, at home all day, with not even live sport or parties as a distraction.
It's going to be a busy time in the maternity wards around the world from December onwards, I'd imagine.

Most with no real expertise in microbial epidemiology, plenty of students on the list. There is a real danger that the media, political pressure, and non expert "academics" will force the UK to diverge from the only real scientifically founded response in the world. The media is giving disproportionate attention to anyone or anything willing to give a divergent view to the governments scientifically founded action plan. A little more support for the plan would be better use of air time than constantly undermining efforts using any crackpot they can dig up to contradict it and confuse the population. Most real experts I know didn't sign, I certainly didn't sign it. Anyway rant over, I shouldn't have looked in, just happened to be watching the news channel at the same time as I was looking in here. I will get back to other more productive things.
