The first person in Britain to die after catching Omicron was an anti-vaxxer pensioner who refused the life-saving jab after becoming convinced it was part of a Government conspiracy to control the population having been brainwashed online, his stepson claimed today.

Damn near 90k new +ve cases today... Yesterday's damn near 80k was +10k over the previous highest. There's only been a couple of days (Jan this year) over 60k, and a handful over 50k...
Highest 3day rolling average so far (64k), and only just short of the highest 7-day (57k, vs 59k in Jan). That's a cert for tomorrow, then, given we were in the low-50k last week...

Bear in mind, if 20% of the population are unwilling to get tested this winter and reinfection is not reflected on the daily dashboard, the real number of “infection” will probably be much higher.

The only thing I look at is the deaths, which are currently pretty stable. I will start to worry when they go up.

The bit in-between covers a vast range of sub-optimal scenarios; from just a few days of feeling awful, through serious hospital time, up to pretty damn horrible long-term consequences.

But I think deaths probably reflect the scale of the other bad outcomes as well.

During the last week of November and the first week of December the infection rate in Sourh Africa rocketed. However the figures for today are only 2k more than 7 days ago. I wonder what is going on?

That would explain the greater spread but potentially less health impact (or is total gibberish that means nothing)

It's smoking what does it !
of my friends and acquaintances who smoke none have had long term effects, but 3 of the non smoking cohort.
My theory is smoking toughens lungs or the hot smoke kills the bug

Yup, up to 82 from a pop'n of 10m. The UK is at 886 on ventilation today, from a pop'n of 67m.
