You're confusing general practise with hospital wards I think, if you are replying to my observations above. You're also not correct about pregnant ladies, at least around here - they are seen face to face. Health workers are also doing home visits as normal again for the first time since we had our son almost 20months ago, they are visiting us on Tuesday. I meant the pregnant doctors who won’t see patients face to face. I'm afraid that is also not true, at least here - my wife is due in a bit over two (*edit it's actually a bit more than three, I must be excited!) weeks and still working as normal, including long shifts. There was no negotiation on that either with HR - only night shifts did she manage to cut back on but was being forced to do long days on NYE weekend so forced to bring forward her maternity leave in order to not do them

Last night Whitty said that Omicron is building on Delta.
In South Africa Omicron replaced Delta as the dominant strain, there was no combined wave.
In under 6 weeks Delta went from 96% to 1% while Omicron went from .5% to 98%.

But Whitty was talking about UK, not SA

So infections today are 88k (about 35k more than the same day last week). Omicron accounts for 1,700 of the cases.
Does this mean that the Delta variant is going beserk?

Personally I'd trust Whitty as far as I could throw him.
He is too much to my mind following the models rather than the science. And the models he seems to follow are very much binary as with the Omicron will build on delta rather than omicron may replace delta.
the Evidence from South Africa is omicron is running out of steam there, although they have a population that is on average younger than the UK, and with a much lower percentage vaccinated.
I trust once the same starts to happen here that our Governments will be told the truth and will take the brakes off. However in the case of Wales I believe our political overlords will keep as much control over the public as they can. I feel here in Wales I've now lost nearly 18 months of my life, and that can't be got back, and to be blunt mentally and emotionally I'm suffering possibly more so because of the number of people who have never obeyed the rules and yet we all get penalised for their behaviours in spreading it.

Once the main political divide was left-right. For a while it was Brexit-remain. Now it seems to be between those that believe politicians relish controlling the public and preventing people going about their lawful business and those that believe the government has repeatedly been too slow to do entirely reasonable things to control the spread of the disease. Boris seems to be under fire from both sides. A bit like Theresa May was over Brexit really.

If 100% of medically able adults had been double vaccinated during the summer...
would we even be having this discussion?

I don't think that's necessarily the case. My reasoning (which I'd like to be challenged) is:- 1. Positive lateral flow tests are still counted as positive test results, even without follow on PCR tests. 2. Lateral flow tests give no indication as to variant at all. 3. There's a lag between lateral flow tests and confirmatory PCR tests. 4. I don't think all PCR test labs are yet able to confirm a test's Omicron status yet. I think the only plausible explanation is that Omicron is surging massively, but we don't have the testing fidelity to pick this out of the data yet.

Globally? Quite possibly not. Nationally, given Omicron, very likely. I was double jabbed. My friend (the radiologist) was tripple jabbed. He came down with it on Monday. Anecdotally, friends of friends are dropping like flies at the moment. Almost all of them will have been double jabbed.

I think you should watch his presentation from last night (15/12/2021) again.

I May be wrong, but I think that is precisely what Whitty was saying in the briefing yesterday - time lag on PCR results confirming 'O'

CONFIRMED Cumulative total for O in the UK is 11,708 today.
The lag has “slowed” the doubling effect. 🤣
