You could buy a whole sodding sheep for less... <edit> <goes to check> OK, maybe not quite. This year's spring lambs are going for high two-digit prices, on average and depending on weight, looking at our local livestock market prices... And that's in a form that's easy to take home, albeit with a little more prep required before cooking.By the bit in bold do you mean killing them? As a start. But wait until after you've got them home, assuming you want them self-propelled.

Dont forget to factor in the control system for the self-propelled dinner. Whats the going rate for a shepherd & sheepdog? If there is a shortage of sheep dogs, I believe there is currently an oversupply of potential Babes (with the added advantage that you can eat that part of the guidance system as well)

Isn't lamb a bit out of season at the minute, spring lamb and all that?

Isn't lamb a bit out of season at the minute, spring lamb and all that? who the hell wants spring lamb ? Its had no chance to gain any proper flavour. Far better to have lamb later in the season when its more mature and closer to the 1 year limit (as well as having let the poor bugger have at least a decent amount of Thyme before it gets married with Rosemary and mint) Still, eat Quorn. Then these considerations are no longer necessary.

I like Hogget and even mutton as well although both are rarely available and need slightly different cooking. I think available 'on request' (sometimes) at my usual butcher.

Flavour ceases to be a consideration. Might just as well eat the washing-up sponge instead. And as for toefood... Can anybody explain to me why veggies and vegans seem so determined to eat massively-processed junk, just because it's vaguely reminiscent of the worst processed meat? I thought going for plant-based diets was meant to be about health and eating naturally...

Can someone explain to me why we can't slaughter pigs ( OK they needstunning with CO2 because the smell of blood makes them hard to control)
but we can cull them (obviously without CO2 and mad with fear)?
Goodluck with that and a bolt gun .

Goodluck with that and a bolt gun . Easy enough to cull but they can't then enter the human food chain. Not enough butchers currently to slaughter 'properly' so that they are suitable for human consumption, but you can kill one yourself for home consumption, if you happen to have a pig.

Anybody else thing it's tragic that we're having to cull pigs at the same time we have food banks?

Anybody else thing it's tragic that we're having to cull pigs at the same time we have food banks? Regarding the waste, I do agree it is tragic. BUT, I don't agree with your premise. Things were even worse for the poor before we had food banks. I'm of the view that slowly but surely things improve - for everyone. Perhaps in 30 years time some people will say how bad the UK is because our electric planes still have "free economy seats" which don't lie flat for those that can't afford to travel to their friends and relatives overseas...

Also tragic for the farmers who have to see the pigs go to waste having nurtured them, and lose their income, putting the farm's future at risk. Not to mention the inevitable shortages on the supermarket shelves in the future.

Things were even worse for the poor before we had food banks. Agreed. The problem isn't the existence of food banks. The increase in the number of food banks is a GOOD thing. The problem is the requirement for them. But at least that requirement is now being met.
