I went out to dinner last night with an old friend. We've not seen each other for the best part of three years (two new babies followed by COVID will do that). He voted leave. We used to have (friendly) arguments about it all the time. His face was a picture when the waiter apologised that the wine he wanted wasn't available "because of Brexit" . It was the first time I've had "posh" Thai. It was excellent!

Perhaps the owner is boycotting those, in common with many of us.

bernythedolt I've honestly no idea. And to be fair it was made even less convincing when the waiter then said "... but I've no interest in politics". The point for me was that it allowed me to have a good laugh at my friend, and referenced so many of those conversations that we'd had to pause for three odd years...

And the proceeding 3000 years. I mean what business did Ali G have parking his arse in India, the Mongols in Europe or the Arabs in Spain. I know a bit nearer than the Falklands but then not so good at boats in those days. Well they think the Vikings got to America! What a good call (and in a vessel that most immigrants wouldn't try to cross the channel in)

There was a programme before looking for and finding Viking artefacts in America. Coincidental timing on this report. I think they got beyond Newfoundland into mainland America too.

If the migrant boats had a canopy over them and some water bags underneath they would be liferafts, so one of the safest boats. They are not out there long enough to need the canopy as Border Force go out to pick them up.

A (Norwegian) friend just reminded me of this. It's aged well . Yes it's very interesting how well Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister stack up too. Quality TV programmes i guess. edit: I watched it after making my comments above very on point and relevant. Very funny thanks for the light relief.

.....and just think how industrious and creative we could have been if we had been colonised by Chinese, rather than a load of lardarses with horns and axes.

Perhaps the owner is boycotting those, in common with many of us. My guess would be that he made the incorrect assumption that most intelligent/educated (even wealthy or wealthyish) people are remainers. As an aside, how has it gone so far? I think better than Remainers were predicting and perhaps not as smooth as Brexiteers were hoping. The main obstacle by far is the EU's obvious desire for the UK to underperform which in my view is vey stupid and will increase Leave sentiment across the continent. Not right now but in time. I've said before I don't think I made the right or wrong decision in 2016 but I resented the force of opinion from establishment intelligent/educated (even wealthy or wealthish) types particularly after the result....

Personally, what really turned me against remain was the attitude of some that anyone who voted leave had to be thick.
and to be frank the attitude of many of the left wing "comics" in the UK lambasting anything that happens as being a result of idiots voting for Brexit and or Conservative at the last election is frankly appalling.
It does feel to me as if UK is becoming more divided along political lines as is much of the US and I think it is a sad reflection on society that we can't be more tolerant of others views

Yeah, sure, its all the EUs fault. Nothing to do with us having a bunch of corrupt, lying clowns in power who want to rip up their own 'oven ready deals' as soon as they are signed. And also nothing to do with these lying clowns using Brexit chaos as a smokescreen to deflect attention from their corruption. Nope, nothing to see here.

Tony Benn and those around now that aspire to him. So if we're split its not on the Left/Right. We're sort of in quarters if you like.....
