Back to Brexit and Logistics, From 21 May 2022, you’ll need a standard international goods vehicle operator licence to transport goods to the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
This will apply to you if you’re based in Great Britain or Northern Ireland and use:
vans or other light goods vehicles (sometimes called ‘light commercial vehicles’)
vans towing trailers
cars towing trailers
The new rules will apply to you if you use:
vans with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) over 2,500kg (2.5 tonnes) and up to and including 3,500kg (3.5 tonnes)
vans towing a trailer with a gross train weight (GTW) over 2.5 tonnes and up to and including 3.5 tonnes
cars towing a trailer with a GTW over 2.5 tonnes and up to and including 3.5 tonnes
You will not need a goods vehicle operator licence if any of these apply:
you only use your vehicles in the UK
you are transporting goods on a non-commercial basis (not for ‘hire or reward’)
You’ll need to get a goods vehicle operator licence to continue using your vans or car and trailers to transport goods in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
You’ll need to apply for a standard international licence - this lets you transport your own and other people’s goods.
It costs £257 to apply for a goods vehicle operator licence.
If your application is successful, you need to pay £401 for the licence.
You’ll then need to pay a continuation fee every 5 years to keep your licence active. This costs £401.www.gov.uk/guidance/transport-goods-in-and-out-of-the-uk-using-vans-or-car-and-trailers-from-21-may-2022?Excellent - another example of the opportunity that Brexit has given us to cut unnecessary red and bureaucracy. Lord Frost will be proud of his legacy.

All I saw was a bloke telling us why Fluke equipment (which I've bought and used professionally many times) costs more than your average copycat knock-off. Same reason you can buy a Chinese shonky 'Brompton' folder for half the price.... if you're happy for the frame to collapse catastrophically one day. I didn't get the link to Brexit and Logistics though? (Nor the reason for posting, if I'm honest). If it's to say that buying into quality and a good reputation costs money, then I agree... but it didn't need to take up 20 minutes for that! 😁

I didn't get the link to Brexit and Logistics though? (Nor the reason for posting, if I'm honest). Sorry, it was a little obscure of me wasn't it. The bit I found interesting was when he was talking about how much investment a customer eg the US military has made in the use of a piece of kit - training, documentation, standards, measurements etc. And the parallel I was trying to draw was the substituting of the EU for the US military as our "customer", and the notion of regulatory divergence... (or, in this case, "changing the design of the fluke").

I wouldn't have made the link in a month of Sundays! Methinks you may have had rather too much time on your hands during your Covid isolation.

Yeah, I just read that. I can't see that working out well for anybody. Except, possibly, Sinn Fein.

Northern Ireland's First Minister Paul Givan intends to announce his resignation later on Thursday, BBC News NI understands. The move is part of the Democratic Unionist Party's (DUP) protest against the Northern Ireland Protocol. The protocol is the part of the Brexit deal that applies to Northern Ireland.
The move would mean Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill, of Sinn Féin, also loses her position.
I've worked with lots of Irish people over the years and most were sensible people. Why is it that when they get involved in politics they become complete kn*bheads. Bring back direct rule from Westminster

Is the DUP in difficulties? They seem to be flailing around. I haven't been folllowing NI politics, but is there a threat to them from the UUP or something?

Arlene resigned after party no-confidence, Poots lasted a fortnight, the current one - Donaldson - is six months in. But he isn't an assembly member - he's an MP... He's also an entrenched homophobe, as well as religious bigot, but they're party policy, so...

This could easily go over in the Ukraine thread, but there seems to be so much denial over there that it might as well be here...
