If Brexiteers did biology they'd be called Lysenkoists. I looked this up. michaelc, don't do that either!

If Brexiteers did biology they'd be called Lysenkoists. Another hilarious slur against 17m fellow citizens… (Are they still ‘gammons’ too, or has that side-splitting witticism died a death now?)

Another hilarious slur against 17m fellow citizens… My apologies, I was imprecise with my language. I meant only to refer to those who refuse to accept the evidence, and those who simply ignore it, because it doesn't conform to their wishes.

Word on the street is "gammons" due to go out of fashion around the same time as "remoaners" so it will be a while yet

If Brexiteers did biology they'd be called Lysenkoists. Another hilarious slur against 17m fellow citizens… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysenkoism"Lysenkoism ... was a political campaign led by Soviet biologist Trofim Lysenko against genetics and science-based agriculture in the mid-20th century, rejecting natural selection in favour of a form of Lamarckism, as well as expanding upon the techniques of vernalization and grafting. In time, the term has come to be identified as any deliberate distortion of scientific facts or theories for purposes that are deemed politically, religiously or socially desirable."How can it be a "slur against 17m fellow citizens", unless we agree as a starting point that the defining characteristic those 17m have in common is deliberate distortion of facts for political ends?

Remoaners: You might like to consider the evidence that the EU is suffering indentical , if not more, financial repercussions as a result of covid, fuel crisis due to war and over zealous green policies.
Do you REALLY still yearn to return to that ridiculous vanity project?

That would depend on how you define Brexiteer. The dictionary definition is a person who is in favour of the UK leaving the EU so that would encompass the 17m who voted leave.

Doesn't that depend if we take it as a static snapshot on 23/6/2016, or if it refers to those who still hold that opinion? It seems unarguable that the second number would be considerably smaller than the first... 35%, as of three weeks ago, apparently. www.statista.com/statistics/987347/brexit-opinion-poll/If we apply that to a similar turnout to 2016, then that would put the number at about 11.75m.

Please present that evidence and I will consider it. The evidence I see shows a significant impact of Brexit on the UK's economy, on top of the other international factors.

What is the solution in your view? Personally I would like to see a root and branch reform of the EU and its co-wasteful institutions. Perhaps even a parallel "trade only" track if all the other nations are still hell bent on becoming one big super block. If there was something interesting for us along those lines, I would be happy if the gov considered entering said new club.

There is such a track, it's the "Norway model" that even Farage used to praise before the referendum, i.e. being in the EEA. (Of course that was rejected after the referendum on the basis that the UK would be a "rule-taker".) I do think the solution is along those lines. Although it may not be politically palatable for a few years yet.

I'm no great fan of Farage (_except_ only his fight after the ref against those who didn't want to accept it) but anything like you mention (so called "soft" brexit) IMO is palatable and would have been palatable by all had that idiot Cameron not resigned but went on to announce quickly what plan B was. In other words, if he'd planned properly for losing the referendum, he might have gone down the EEA route and had he done so most people would have broadly got behind it with far less of the anti-democratic shenanigans that subsequently took place. Edit: And just watched your 2 minute video there. Very interesting! Shame that never happened.

...had that idiot Cameron not resigned but went on to announce quickly what plan B was. Nope, he did absolutely the right thing. "What I wanted for the country isn't happening, you need to find a leader who wants the route we're taking"That's fairly solidly country-before-self, imho. Why was it up to a remainer to plan for losing, not for the leave campaign to plan for what'd happen if they won? and would have been utterly castigated by leavers. No, they wouldn't. He'd have been unable to do ANYTHING without being shouted at for trying to sabotage the will of the people. Which particular "anti-democratic shenanigans" are you meaning?

Perhaps even a parallel "trade only" track if all the other nations are still hell bent on becoming one big super block. Retaining membership of the single market, you mean? May ruled that out with her "red lines" saying no ECJ involvement. Of course, single market membership is built around the four indivisible freedoms of movement. Capital, Services, Goods, People. ...and we all know how much those campaigning for leave wanted to retain one of those four.
